What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2021-22 Sustainability Report UltraTech identified a range of material issues, such as climate change, health and safety, transparency, sustainable products, research and development. Among these, creating economic value for its stakeholders stands out as a key material issue for UltraTech.

Stakeholder engagement in accordance with the GRI Standards

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) defines the Principle of Stakeholder Inclusiveness when identifying material issues (or a company’s most important impacts) as follows:

Stakeholders must be consulted in the process of identifying a company’s most important impacts and their reasonable expectations and interests must be taken into account. This is an important cornerstone for CSR / sustainability reporting done responsibly.

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics CRH engaged with its stakeholders through online surveys, telephone interviews and focus group sessions.

What actions were taken by CRH to promote sustainability across its supply chain?

In its 2020 Sustainability Report CRH reports that it took the following actions for promoting sustainability across its supply chain:

Promoting good practices

CRH sources goods and services through multiple routes: from centralised procurement, to local buying and to e-sourcing. CRH’s ‘Know Your Supplier’ due diligence system provides key third-party data points for financial risk, sanctions screening and adverse media. CRH expects 100% of its suppliers to comply with its Supplier Code of Conduct (100% of new suppliers are screened in line with the Code), and all of its procurement teams are increasingly integrating sustainability into its sourcing processes. CRH’s supplier selection and ongoing assessment processes also include sustainability criteria. Additionally, CRH increasingly builds on its key supplier relationships, to make sure it responds to sustainability issues and provides added value in key areas.

Assessing risks

CRH assesses risks at a commodity level, in line with ISO 20400 best practice and uses 12 assessment criteria covering areas such as health and safety, human and labour rights, environment, climate change and governance, to understand potential risks and act strategically across a range of profiles which can be improved. CRH provides responsible procurement training to those staff working directly with its The training helps equip staff with the understanding and tools to be able to spot issues and effectively engage suppliers through their Category Strategy Plans. In addition, by integrating sustainability requirements at the start of the tender stage, CRH is able to mitigate risks more effectively than after the event.

Which GRI Standards and corresponding Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been addressed?

The GRI Standards addressed in this case are:

1) Disclosure 308-1 New suppliers that were screened using environmental criteria

This case study is based on the 2019 Sustainability Update by Wienerberger published on the Global Reporting Initiative Sustainability Disclosure Database that can be found at this link. Through all case studies we aim to demonstrate what CSR/ ESG/ sustainability reporting done responsibly means. Essentially, it means: a) identifying a company’s most important impacts on the environment, economy and society, and b) measuring, managing and changing.

Abstract

To ensure compliance with minimum ESG (environmental, social, governance) standards along its entire supply chain, Wienerberger has its suppliers in selected areas of procurement assessed by a specialised rating agency. In order to promote sustainability across its supply chain Wienerberger took action to:

implement a group-wide Supplier Code of Conduct

audit suppliers

rate suppliers’ sustainability performance

screen suppliers

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2019 Sustainability Update Wienerberger identified a range of material issues, such as employee safety and health, innovative and durable products, climate action, business ethics and compliance, energy efficiency. Among these, promoting sustainability across its supply chain stands out as a key material issue for Wienerberger.

Stakeholder engagement in accordance with the GRI Standards

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) defines the Principle of Stakeholder Inclusiveness when identifying material issues (or a company’s most important impacts) as follows:

“The reporting organization shall identify its stakeholders, and explain how it has responded to their reasonable expectations and interests.”

Stakeholders must be consulted in the process of identifying a company’s most important impacts and their reasonable expectations and interests must be taken into account. This is an important cornerstone for CSR / sustainability reporting done responsibly.

Key stakeholder groups Wienerberger engages with:

Stakeholder Group

Employees

Media and non-governmental organisations (NGOs)

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics Wienerberger engaged with its stakeholders through an online survey. Almost 500 stakeholders were invited to participate, 80% of them external stakeholders.

What actions were taken by Wienerberger to promote sustainability across its supply chain?

In its 2019 Sustainability Update Wienerberger reports that it took the following actions for promoting sustainability across its supply chain:

Implementing a group-wide Supplier Code of Conduct

In 2019, a uniform, group-wide Supplier Code of Conduct was elaborated by Wienerberger in cooperation with internal and external experts and rolled out to almost all operating segments, replacing the previous segment-specific supplier codes of conduct. The implementation of the uniform, group-wide Supplier Code of Conduct was supported by the new group-wide procurement structure managed by the Head of Corporate Procurement.

Auditing suppliers

In 2018, a formal training programme run by external certification bodies was introduced by Wienerberger in order to train employees working in Corporate Procurement to perform supplier audits. In 2019, employees working in the procurement units of the country organisations were selected to receive the same type of training for the performance of supplier audits. Corporate Procurement, as a staff function, nominated the employees on the basis of strategic considerations and will roll out the certified external training of employees step by step to all country organisations. The objective is to perform standardised supplier audits throughout the Group and to have at least one certified employee in each country organisation qualified to perform supplier audits. In 2019, Corporate Procurement also began to define uniform follow-up processes to be observed following the supplier audits on the basis of the audit results. Once the process has been fully defined, supplier audits are to be initiated in those areas of procurement and geographic locations where the biggest potential risks are assumed to exist. These audits will cover significant non-financial matters, such as health and safety of employees, respect for human rights, the fight against corruption and bribery, and environmental protection. On the basis of the audit results, the suppliers will then be informed of corrective measures to be taken and deadlines will be set for the implementation of improvements.

Rating suppliers’ sustainability performance

Since 2019, Wienerberger has had the sustainability performance and potential supplier risks in selected areas of procurement rated by EcoVadis, an international partner for sustainability ratings (environmental, social, governance – ESG ratings). Within the framework of cooperation with EcoVadis, the sustainability ratings and risk analyses of suppliers in selected areas of procurement are being rolled out step by step. Additionally, an internal data platform (supplier relationship management tool), containing information on the financial terms and conditions of all Wienerberger suppliers, has been implemented. The ratings of the suppliers’ sustainability performance by EcoVadis are also stored on the data platform. This enables Wienerberger to evaluate suppliers on the basis of their sustainability and risk ratings, in combination with their financial terms and conditions.

Screening suppliers

Another measure introduced in 2019 by Wienerberger was the monthly screening of all suppliers and customers registered in the SAP (Systems Applications and Products) system via an interactive data platform against international sanctions lists published by the UN (United Nations), the EU and the Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) at the US Department of the Treasury. The screening is performed centrally by a sanctions management software, which runs monthly checks of all customer and supplier master data in the SAP system. Every “match” is transmitted to the local management in charge for assessment and follow-up. The local decision whether to continue doing business with the supplier or customer concerned must be communicated to Corporate Legal Services for further coordination. All decisions taken in this context are documented in the sanctions management software.

Which GRI Standards and corresponding Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been addressed?

The GRI Standards addressed in this case are:

1) Disclosure 308-2 Negative environmental impacts in the supply chain and actions taken

What actions were taken by RAK Ceramics to promote sustainability among its suppliers?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report RAK Ceramics reports that it took the following actions for promoting sustainability among its suppliers:

Assessing suppliers

Prior to becoming a supplier for RAK Ceramics, it is mandatory for all key suppliers to complete a supplier assessment questionnaire, which outlines the minimum requirements for quality, environmental practices, health and safety and ethical standards. Going forward, RAK Ceramics wishes to implement a more sustainable procurement process that will include several sustainability markers which RAK Ceramics will use to assess all future suppliers.

Implementing Supplier Guiding Principles

In FY20, RAK Ceramics is looking at implementing Supplier Guiding Principles for all key suppliers, which will focus on additional sustainability requirements that RAK Ceramics expects the suppliers to meet. RAK Ceramics will continue to work on its supply chain strategy, so it continues to meet the demands of the business and be in line with RAK Ceramics’ stakeholder values. Additionally, RAK Ceramics is committed to using local suppliers where possible in order to support the local community. In 2019, RAK Ceramics spent approximately 678 million AED with 1143 direct suppliers (with 64% of those being local suppliers in the UAE – figures include RAK Ceramics, Elegance Ceramics and RAK Porcelain vendors).

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2019 Integrated Report CEMEX identified a range of material issues, such as customer experience and satisfaction, health and safety, product quality and innovation, business ethics and transparency, transport and logistics optimisation. Among these, promoting sustainability among its suppliers stands out as a key material issue for CEMEX.

Stakeholder engagement in accordance with the GRI Standards

CEMEX closely cooperates with its suppliers to foster its continuous innovation and implement the most sustainable practices in its day-to-day operations.

What actions were taken by CEMEX to promote sustainability among its suppliers?

In its 2019 Integrated Report CEMEX reports that it took the following actions for promoting sustainability among its suppliers:

Promoting supplier health and safety

At CEMEX, its commitment to the health and safety of its employees, suppliers, and partners is a top priority. In addition to its Supplier Sustainability Programme, CEMEX’s Contractor Health & Safety Verification Programme is designed to verify the health and safety practices of contractors with access to its facilities. The verification requires liability policies, risk premiums, health & safety manuals and procedures, and accreditations, among other requirements. Valid for one year, this evaluation helps CEMEX to verify that contractor companies know and comply with the health & safety processes and keep safe while working with it. For 2019, CEMEX reached its yearly goal of evaluating at least 80% of procurement contractors’ spend through a third-party organisation that specialises in the evaluation of health and safety practices. To achieve this goal, CEMEX engaged all of its operating countries and worked closely with its Global Health and Safety team to implement this key health and safety initiative. To foster its supplier sustainability engagement, CEMEX provides continuous communication and training to its Procurement teams on sustainability issues, so they can develop suppliers that are more closely aligned with CEMEX’s sustainability principles.

Assessing suppliers

Since 2010, CEMEX’s Supplier Sustainability Programme has made an extensive commitment to sustainability across its value chain, communicating and promoting responsible practices. In collaboration with third-party evaluators, CEMEX invites its suppliers to perform a sustainability assessment based on ISO 26000 guidelines and covering social, environmental, health and safety (H&S), business ethics, stakeholder relationships, and financial performance standards. After suppliers are evaluated, a specialised third-party firm analyses the information provided, prepares a consolidated report—including findings and conclusions from the assessment and identified opportunity areas—and proposes an action plan to close gaps, if any. This evaluation is periodically updated, and suppliers are expected to continuously improve their score. This grade is integrated into the supplier’s scorecard to track and reward suppliers that demonstrate advanced sustainability practices. CEMEX’s 2030 goal is to assess at least 80% of the critical suppliers spend under the company’s Procurement scope. By critical, CEMEX refers to those business partners who can have a significant impact on its three core businesses: cement, ready-mix concrete, and aggregates. Specifically, this involves those suppliers who could affect the continuity of CEMEX’s operations, involve health & safety and 80% contractors’ environmental risks, and/or have the highest spend. In 2019, CEMEX worked closely with its business units to evaluate the sustainability practices of critical suppliers with or without access to its facilities. Thanks to its collaborative efforts, CEMEX achieved and exceeded its annual target of 36%, assessing 44% of the company’s critical suppliers’ Procurement spend with sustainability criteria—on a good track to achieve its 2030 goal of 80%. Moreover, during 2019, CEMEX consolidated all European suppliers under one business unit instead of seven separate countries, to facilitate critical suppliers’ sustainability assessment. Also, CEMEX further leveraged its Supplier Sustainability Programme by integrating and engaging the suppliers of the Trinidad Cement Group acquired in 2017, with operations mainly in Jamaica, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Implementing a Suppliers Code of Conduct

As a member of the GCCA (Global Cement and Concrete Association), CEMEX adopts its principles in its Code of Conduct When Doing Business With Us and expects its suppliers to honour its Suppliers Code of Conduct’s 12 principles:

PROMOTE health and safety as a top priority

UPHOLD decent working conditions

GUARANTEE freedom of association and non-retaliation

AVOID forced labour

DENY child labour

SEEK equality and fairness in supplier relations

COMPLY with environmental regulations

MANAGE environmental impacts

REJECT bribery and corruption—anti-money laundering

ENCOURAGE transparency and integrity

MAINTAIN standard business practices related to gifts, services, and other courtesies

ENHANCE equality and fairness in supplier relations
