What actions were taken by Celestica to treat waste responsibly?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report Celestica reports that it took the following actions for treating waste responsibly:

Enabling waste solutions

Celestica helps its customers bring their innovations and product solutions to life by working behind the scenes at all stages of the product lifecycle – from design, prototype, manufacturing, and shipping to product recycling and refurbishing solutions. In its Industrial and Smart Energy businesses, Celestica is helping its customers bring smart trash receptacles to market. These highly complex, intelligent and connected systems collect trash bins only when full, which reduces energy costs and improves performance, sustainability, and waste reduction.

Promoting circularity

Celestica provides services that focus on designs with full lifecycle circularity, closed-loop systems, and after-market services. Offering products as a service is a tenet of the circular economy because it transforms the concept of ownership and encourages manufacturers to rethink how a product is used over its lifetime. Shifting mindsets from manufacturing products to delivering customer outcomes is growing the circular economy model. Celestica is working with customers to manage products through design, usage, maintenance, reuse, remanufacture, and recycling. This is being done through take-back programmes, keeping useful materials out of landfills or recycling streams, and screening and repairing products to be distributed back to customers. Within its Asset Recovery Services, Celestica has been able to create this circular model and properly recycle any residual materials.

Organising the Global Waste Reduction Week

2019 marked Celestica’s fifth Global Waste Reduction Week, an event that engages employees in reducing waste. Employees at 14 sites participated in the event and, in total, more than 1,900 kg of material was diverted from landfill during the week:

Partnering to Reduce Waste (Toronto): Employees hosted an on-site showcase of sustainable partnerships, which included an employee donation drive for smartphones. The phones were refurbished and upgraded with accessible technologies and distributed to the visually impaired through a local charity.

Waste Reduction (Valencia): Site employees promoted waste reduction with educational pamphlets featuring best practices for plastic use in their canteens. Additionally, more than 120 kg of unused tables were disassembled and reused for work benches on the manufacturing line.

Electronics Recycling (Toronto, Mississauga, Newmarket, Penang, Song Shan Lake): Approximately 115 kg of obsolete electronic waste including batteries were diverted from landfill by being recycled ethically.

Book and Clothing Drives (Toronto, Mississauga, Monterrey, Newmarket, Tucson, Penang, Suzhou, Thailand, Valencia, Oradea): Around the world, Celestica employees held book, toy, and clothing drives to reduce overall waste and give back to their communities. More than 300 kg of goods including winter clothing, books, food, toys and more were collected and distributed to orphanages, shelters for the homeless, abused women, and refugees.

Greening Meals (Leixlip, Suzhou GBS, Shanghai): Each of these sites introduced reusable cutlery, plates or mugs in their employee cafeterias. It is estimated that these initiatives will reduce 5,400 kg of waste annually.

Which GRI Standards and corresponding Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been addressed?

The GRI Standard addressed in this case is: Disclosure 306-2 Waste by type and disposal method

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics Greif conducted interviews and surveys with Greif leadership and external stakeholders.

What actions were taken by Greif to promote treat waste responsibly?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report Greif reports that it took the following actions for treating waste responsibly:

Reducing VOCs through the use of water-based exterior paints

Since 2009, Greif has been committed to using water-based exterior paints in its operations, rather than high volatile organic compound (VOC) exterior paints. Through transitioning to water-based paints, Greif reduced VOC-based emissions by 40 percent. Greif’s Alsip, Illinois facility reduced VOC content by approximately 2 lbs./gallon. In RIPS China, five Greif facilities successfully tested their capabilities to use water-based exterior paints and some began transitioning customers to the products using them. Additionally, Greif’s North American Rigid Industrial Packaging & Services (RIPS) operations collect excess exterior steel drum paint to reuse to paint the bottom of the drums. Termed “Greif Gray,” this recollected paint reduced paint waste by 22 percent in 2017.

Reducing waste by addressing wastewater

In 2017, Greif’s RIPS facility in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia was the largest contributor of waste to landfill in the EMEA region (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) with 36 percent of waste going to landfill. Through analysing their waste streams, the facility team determined that this was primarily due to wastewater that, if treated properly, could be recycled. Despite limited infrastructure support, availability of recycling partners and transportation options, the team worked to establish a process to internally separate and clean water to acceptable levels for local transporters and recyclers, and consistently return water to them. Through these measures, the team reduced the oil content of the water from 60 ppm to 1.5 ppm and decreased their waste-to-landfill to four percent by the end of 2019. Due to Saudi Arabia’s own water scarcity, the impact of this initiative goes far beyond Greif’s operations. Through initiatives like this Greif has the ability to set a precedent for other businesses and, ultimately, impact the local community.

Turning waste to fuel

In 2019, Greif collaborated with one of its waste management partners to identify materials used in its operations that could enter their engineered fuels programme, which aims to identify materials that have a high heat value such as plastics, oils and absorbents, that can be used as fuel in certain applications that require significant amounts of energy, such as cement kilns. Through this collaboration, polypropylene lids used on Greif’s fiber and plastic drums were identified as strong options to enter this programme. Since these lids cannot be recycled, Greif’s Naperville, Illinois facility collected and palletised 3.3 tons of lids to enter into this programme. Without this programme, the lids would have been sent to landfill.

Achieving waste reduction through customer service excellence

In 2019, Greif’s RIPS facility in Sweden received a customer complaint that Jerry cans were being damaged during unpacking because the plastic film used to wrap the pallets was too tight and difficult to remove. In response, the facility tested a number of film alternatives that were easier to remove and posed less risk of damaging the cans and ultimately selected an alternative that reduced the use of film by 48 percent, saving 7500 kg of materials annually. The transition also led to $12,000 USD savings and a 22,000 kg emission reduction. In order to scale the project, the team updated the standard operating procedure for using similar films and worked with Greif’s procurement team to update the supplier and material for the film.

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2018-19 Sustainability Report Hindalco identified a range of material issues, such as environmental compliance, GHG emissions, ethics and integrity, occupational health and safety, water availability. Among these, treating waste responsibly stands out as a key material issue for Hindalco.

Stakeholder engagement in accordance with the GRI Standards

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) defines the Principle of Stakeholder Inclusiveness when identifying material issues (or a company’s most important impacts) as follows:

“The reporting organization shall identify its stakeholders, and explain how it has responded to their reasonable expectations and interests.”

Stakeholders must be consulted in the process of identifying a company’s most important impacts and their reasonable expectations and interests must be taken into account. This is an important cornerstone for CSR / sustainability reporting done responsibly.

What actions were taken by Hindalco to treat waste responsibly?

In its 2018-19 Sustainability Report Hindalco reports that it took the following actions for treating waste responsibly:

Launching the ‘Value from Waste’ initiative

Hindalco’s ‘Value from Waste’ initiative is aimed at achieving 100 utilisation of key wastes by 2025. In alignment to this initiative, Hindalco’s wastes like bauxite residue, fly ash, spent pot lining, aluminium dross, vanadium sludge, copper slag and phospho-gypsum are collected, stored and disposed. The total waste generation from Hindalco’s operations during the reporting period was 13.07 million MT, of which 0.37 million MT was hazardous waste and 12.70 million MT was non-hazardous waste. A major part of solid waste generated from Hindalco’s operations consists of bauxite residue and fly ash, and Hindalco focuses on maximum utilisation of these wastes.

Adopting the circular economy approach

As part of its circular economy approach, Hindalco has identified avenues for utilisation of waste generated from its industry as a raw material for various other industries. Hindalco has taken specific initiatives for waste disposal of bauxite residue and spent pot lining. The spent pot lining is processed in-house for further reuse as a refractory application. The bauxite residue is sold to cement industries as useful raw material and for manufacturing of paver blocks. The project for utilisation of bauxite residue with geo-polymer for construction application was initiated during the reporting period and is under progress as of now. In addition to these initiatives, a study was carried out for utilisation of bauxite residue for backfilling of mines. This has helped Hindalco dispose of the waste generated from the previous financial year as well. In FY 2018-19, a total of 13.75 million MT of waste was disposed, of which 0.32 million MT was hazardous waste and 13.43 million MT was non-hazardous waste.

What actions were taken by Ford Otosan to treat waste responsibly?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report Ford Otosan reports that it took the following actions for treating waste responsibly:

Reducing plastic waste

Ford Otosan adopts the zero waste approach in tackling plastic pollution and implements projects to reduce plastic waste at its source. Ford Otosan supports Koç Holding’s commitment to end consumption of disposable plastics by the end of 2020 and continues its efforts accordingly, eliminating the use of disposable plastics in dining halls and offices, reducing plastic consumption in these areas by 50%. Ford Otosan is also carrying out an awareness campaign in order to eliminate the use of plastic bags for the parts delivered as wrapped in nylon covers in Yeniköy and Gölcük plants. Ford Otosan examined the packaging of 454 different parts under the My Plant My Environment (Benim Fabrikam Benim Çevrem) project and identified the opportunity to improve the number of pieces per case for 177 parts, improve the number of pieces for 266 parts and reduce the use of plastic bags. And in terms of logistics costs, Ford Otosan saves 764,000 TL annually.

Implementing a compost project

In line with the goal of reducing domestic waste at the Eskişehir Plant, Ford Otosan designed a composting machine to produce compost and built it with the metal waste materials obtained from the plant. Thanks to this machine, food waste from the cafeteria and the tea wastes from the tea houses are used to produce compost. Ford Otosan aims to use this compost as a plant nutrient in the green areas located at its plant site and to give them to employees who demand it. Experimental studies and outputs of the project are still examined as an undergraduate thesis at Eskişehir Technical University, Environmental Engineering Department.

Launching a Bioamp Bacteria Application

Ford Otosan started to use bacteria instead of an oil trap to prevent the oils generated during the washing process from flowing into the wastewater. The bacteria prevented fat accumulation and solidification. Thanks to this project, Ford Otosan reduced waste generation and saved from monthly cleaning time and labour, also minimising occupational health and safety risks.

In its 2019 Corporate Social Responsibility Report Xerox reports that it took the following actions for treating waste responsibly:

Reducing hazardous waste

Since 1999, Xerox has reduced the quantity of hazardous waste generated by almost 90 percent. These hazardous waste reduction activities included manufacturing technology changes and reuse/recycling initiatives. Xerox seeks to manage these waste streams in a beneficial manner. Approximately 65 percent of the hazardous waste generated in 2018 was managed at fuels blending and solvent recycling facilities. Only 1.49 tons of hazardous waste was landfilled, while all other hazardous waste generated during the year was treated and/or incinerated. Xerox does not export hazardous waste to developing nations.

Reusing and recycling non-hazardous solid waste

Xerox reuses boxes, pallets, and containers for parts delivery, captures and reprocesses toner that is outside the acceptable size range during manufacturing, recycles returned equipment, and reuses totes for recycling scrap metal and paper. Xerox’s process waste consists primarily of paper, wood, pallets, waste toner, plastics, and packaging waste, such as corrugated cardboard. Equipment manufacturing waste includes scrap metal, waste batteries and lamps, miscellaneous trash, and unusable, end-of-life equipment and parts that clients return to Xerox for processing and remanufacturing. This waste made up about 68 percent of the non-hazardous solid waste managed by Xerox operations in 2018. Xerox is able to reuse or recycle nearly 100 percent of the equipment and parts generated from its client and field service returns. Xerox’s goal is to reuse, recycle, or recover energy from 100 percent of waste generated at facilities globally, by 2020. In 2018, 95 percent of non-hazardous solid waste generated was reused in equipment repairs or remanufacturing, recycled, or used to produce energy, up from 94 percent in 2017. Xerox’s equipment resellers were also able to return a greater number of products to the marketplace for resale.

Addressing environmental contamination

In 1985, Xerox voluntarily assessed its real estate portfolio globally and identified sixty-eight facilities that required corrective actions to address environmental contamination. Xerox worked closely with the appropriate federal, state, and local agencies to implement prompt and appropriate measures to ensure the protection of employees, neighbours, and the environment. Today, only three of the original sixty-eight sites require active remedial or control measures. Source areas of contamination have effectively been removed or greatly reduced, allowing the remediated properties to be available for reuse or redevelopment. Xerox is conducting post-remediation compliance monitoring at one site that is no longer subject to active remediation, which will enable the regulatory process for managing this site to be completed. Besides employing conventional techniques for groundwater recovery and treatment and soil excavation, Xerox has a history of developing innovative technologies to enhance its remedial efforts. These include techniques that improve and accelerate the recovery of contaminants, such as high-vacuum 2-Phase Extraction and enhanced bedrock fracturing. Xerox also employs technologies where contaminants are degraded or converted to less harmful substances through enhanced natural biodegradation and chemical oxidation processes.

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report Kerry Properties identified a range of material issues, such as business ethics and integrity, information privacy, customer health and safety, service and product quality, socioeconomic compliance. Among these, treating waste responsibly stands out as a key material issue for Kerry Properties.

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics Kerry Properties engaged with over 700 stakeholders through face-to-face interviews, focus group workshops and a questionnaire survey.

What actions were taken by Kerry Properties to treat waste responsibly?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report Kerry Properties reports that it took the following actions for treating waste responsibly:

Recycling waste

Kerry Properties requires all contractors at construction sites to collect and sort waste properly and dispose of them according to local rules and regulations. It is also compulsory for them to track waste generation against the monthly recycling target set within Kerry Properties’ EMS (Environmental Management Systems). In 2019, Kerry Properties achieved and exceeded the target of 60% recycling rate of construction waste. Additionally, under the Enhanced Safety Performance and Environmental Protection Scheme, contractors are rewarded if more than 70% of C&D (construction and demolition) waste generated is recycled.

Providing employees with guidelines on waste management

In Hong Kong, Kerry Properties provides its employees with guidelines on waste management and reduction, to make sure that they understand the best practice. To prepare for the upcoming municipal solid waste charging scheme, Kerry Properties arranged training for property management staff. In China, Kerry Properties communicated the latest information and practices on waste sorting among employees and customers on social media platforms. In December 2019, Kerry Properties also held an EMS upcycling workshop in the head office though which it engaged its staff in sustainable waste management in a casual and practical way. For example, staff learned how to transform old jeans to stylish and practical denim bags.

Driving behavioural change among tenants, residents and customers

To drive behavioural change among tenants, residents and customers for promoting environmental protection, Kerry Properties provided relevant waste handling guidelines and organised a series of recycling campaigns, educational tours and workshops. In response to the introduction of mandatory garbage classification in Shanghai and Hangzhou, Kerry Properties introduced new waste management initiatives to Kerry Everbright City Phase III and Hangzhou Kerry Centre. Designated personnel were assigned with the responsibility of enforcing and monitoring the waste sorting and recycling. Tenants and customers were provided with clearly labelled containers and sorting guidance. To encourage waste reduction at the source, Kerry Properties also distributed reusable umbrella bags to tenants and residents as souvenirs during its green activities in Hong Kong. At Kerry Everbright City Phase III, Kerry Properties produced posters, notices and videos on waste sorting to raise awareness. Community activities, such as visiting tours, were also organised to promote best practices. At Hong Kong Kerry Centre, Kerry Properties held a 66-day “Bring Your Own Container” campaign to encourage customers to build a green habit. During the campaign, customers who brought their own takeaway containers could enjoy discounts at selected restaurants.

Monitoring waste

In 2019, Kerry Properties set up a smart waste monitoring system in five properties in Hong Kong. Waste and recyclable data were collected through cloud technology, enabling Kerry Properties to track waste generation more accurately and efficiently. At the same time, Kerry Properties organised educational activities on waste reduction and recycling.

Prioritising food waste management

Food waste has been one of Kerry Properties’ priorities in waste management. Selected properties in Hong Kong and China are equipped with food waste decomposers and, in 2019, food waste decomposers were installed in additional properties, for example, The Bloomsway, Mantin Heights, and Mont Rouge. Moving forward, Kerry Properties will explore the feasibility of introducing food waste decomposers to other managed properties. At MegaBox, Kerry Properties extended, since May 2019, the food waste collection and recycling programme to food and beverage tenants. Collected food waste was transported to O • PARK1, the first organic resources recovery centre in Hong Kong. Food waste is converted into biogas and compost, which are used for electricity generation and landscaping and agricultural purposes respectively.

Reducing plastic waste

To reduce plastic waste at the source, Kerry Properties introduced the “No Disposables” campaign to its managed properties in Hong Kong in 2019. Kerry Properties aims to ban disposable cutlery in all clubhouse activities through this campaign. Bottled water was also banned in all in-house staff engagement activities, meetings and large functions in Hong Kong. Instead, Kerry Properties provides water dispensers and water served with glasses whenever possible. To demonstrate its commitment to plastic management with its business partners, Kerry Properties also requires building contractors to ban plastic bottled water from all meetings at construction sites under “Kerry Project — Community Caring Scheme”. To promote recycling of plastic bottles, Kerry Properties installed smart plastic-bottle recycling machines at Kerry Everbright City Phase III, Shanghai Central Residences in Shanghai and MegaBox in Hong Kong. Kerry Properties offered monetary incentives for bottles returned, while plastic bottles collected will be used to produce new bottles.

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report Sheng Siong identified a range of material issues, such as customer satisfaction, food and product safety, employee engagement and development, governance and ethics, affordable food, occupational health, safety and well-being. Among these, treating waste responsibly stands out as a key material issue for Sheng Siong.

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics Sheng Siong distributed an online survey to both internal and external stakeholders (including customers) to gather perspectives on the most important sustainability topics, collecting more than 1500 responses from employees across the business and 179 responses from external stakeholders including suppliers, government agencies, NGOs, VWOs, media and shareholders.

In its 2019 Sustainability Report Sheng Siong reports that it took the following actions for treating waste responsibly:

Reducing food waste

Sheng Siong has put in place sound purchasing and inventory management policies, excellent storage and food handling standards and systems, and adopted state-of-the-art packaging and processing techniques to prolong the shelf life of its products and produce. Sheng Siong also participates in Food Waste Reduction Campaigns headed by the National Environmental Agency (NEA). This includes putting up posters and signage in its stores to raise awareness and educate consumers to handle Sheng Siong’s fresh produce with care, to shop wisely and adopt good storage practices at home, so as not to waste food. “Reduced to Clear” sections have also been introduced since 2011, where fresh produce that is slightly blemished but still wholesome, or that are close to expiry are sold at reduced prices. Since 2017, Sheng Siong has been collaborating with NEA on a food waste co-digestion project, where source-segregated food waste collected from 13 of Sheng Siong’s stores and distribution centre is sent daily to a facility at Ulu Pandan Water Reclamation Plant for co-digestion with used water sludge. This co-digestion process yields more biogas from the anaerobic digestion process compared to the treatment of used water sludge alone, thereby enhancing energy recovery. By 2019, the project was extended to all 59 stores including Sheng Siong’s distribution centre, and an estimated 3,035 tonnes of food waste generated was successfully diverted.

Recycling waste

Sheng Siong partners with its suppliers to reuse plastic crates for the supply of its fresh vegetables, fruits, seafood and eggs. Styrofoam boxes that are typically used by suppliers to supply temperature-sensitive products are also washed, sanitised and reused internally. Excess styrofoam boxes are collected to be recycled. Sheng Siong sorts its waste conscientiously for recycling. A paper-compacting machine is used to compact carton boxes (collected from the stores) into cubes to reduce the space required for delivery to the recycling plant. Sheng Siong also recycles food waste, plastic, wooden pallets, stretched film, styrofoam boxes, cans and metals.

Reducing packaging waste

Sheng Siong has been a signatory to the Singapore Packaging Agreement (SPA) since 2018. In 2019, Sheng Siong was conferred the Excellence Award (Multinational Company and Local Large Enterprise Category) by SPA for its exemplary efforts in reducing packaging waste. Some of the initiatives Sheng Siong continues to implement include:

Reviewing packaging of its housebrand products: Packaging used for Sheng Siong’s housebrand products falls within the “Lightest” to “Median” range of the Packaging Benchmarking Database developed by the SPA, where information about the packaging of the product is available.

Making a conscientious effort in the design and choice of packaging when developing new housebrand products.

Working with suppliers to replace styrofoam packing with alternative materials such as paper cartons wherever possible without compromising on the freshness and quality of fresh food products.

Collaborating with partners to continue raising awareness on the need to reduce plastic usage, and actions that every shopper can take.

In 2019, Sheng Siong successfully reduced the use of pallet stretch film (used for wrapping and securing bulk cargo during transportation) by 22.5% compared to 2018 by switching to one of a different material specification. Sheng Siong also estimates that it has reduced the rate of usage of plastic bags by about 6.5%, as compared to 2018.

What actions were taken by PTI to optimise water use?

In its 2018 Corporate Sustainability Report PTI reports that it took the following actions for optimising water use:

Promoting process water conservation

PTI is keen on the utilisation and protection of water resources and has actively implemented, since 2009, a Process Wastewater Recycling System in all its plants, solving the problem of large amounts of silicon dioxide particulate matter from the process of wafer dicing and grinding. With the use of ultra-filtration, PTI filters out insoluble solids through the hollow fiber membrane, and steadily recycles and reuses the wastewater from the dicing and grinding process. The PTI Taiwan Plants capable of packaging process water recycling are the Hsinpu Plant (Plant 1), Hukou Plant (Plant 2), Datong Plant (3A Plant), Datong Plant (3C Plant), and Hsinchu Science Park Plant (P8). These Plants are installed with dicing/grinding wastewater recycling systems and the manageable hourly volume is designed based on the estimation of production needs. In response to PTI’s production plans the recycling systems are constantly expanding, with the recycling equipment efficiency rate reaching more than 85% from 2014 to 2018. The packaging process water consumption in 2018 was 2,388,357 tons, increased by 53,919 tons from 2017 – approximately a 2.3% increase – and the recycled water from the packaging process in 2018 was 1,227,588 tons, increased by 175,394 tons from 2017 (approximately a 16.7% increase). PTI continues to optimise the system, to increase water recycling volume and recycling effectiveness. In 2018, PTI Taiwan’s recycled water from the production process had a ratio of 90%, while recycled water from the packaging process had a ratio of 34%.

Following the ISO 14046 Water Footprint Standard

PTI cares about the issue of water resources and spontaneously and proactively takes part in the projects of the Industrial Development Bureau, Ministry of Economic Affairs. PTI follows the ISO 14046 Water Footprint Standard and has established the procedure for the inventory check of the water footprint of products, tools, forms, and fundamental inventory check ability, among others. The complete water management system is set up in order to meet the international requirement for disclosing water information. PTI’s Hukou Plant (Plant 2), Datong Plant (Plant 3A), and Datong Plant (Plant 3C) passed the verification procedure of SGS Taiwan Ltd. in 2017 and acquired the organisational and product (Flash) water footprint verification declaration, continuing to promote consistent water resource management within the factory and reducing the consumption of water resources, ensuring co-existence and co-prosperity between business operation and the environment.

Managing wastewater responsibly

PTI’s factories follow the applicable wastewater treatment requirements of the competent authority, with wastewater going through the factory sewage treatment system and processed till it reaches the effluent or control criteria before it is released. Wastewater management is also done through the real-time monitoring equipment and the flow meter and detector are calibrated periodically in order to ensure the accuracy of data and the stability of the processing system. Meanwhile, the plants go through impromptu water quality inspections from the competent authority and have been meeting the requirements. For rainwater gutters, periodic monitoring is carried out as well, in order to prevent against impacts from overflowing of wastewater to an external environment as a result of a storm. The total amount of wastewater discharged by PTI TW in 2018 was 1,784,241 tons, a decrease of 18,867 tons from 2017, mainly because of the increased re-utilisation rate of recycled water and the reduced emissions of wastewater (sewage).

By including updated disclosures, circularity and waste prevention concepts, the Waste Standard reflects global best practices on waste management. This provides for a practical and usable tool and harmonisation with SDG 12. GRI 306: Waste 2020 includes two management approach – beyond the GRI 103 guidelines – and three topic-specific disclosures, that will support organisations to:

Understand and publicly report how procurement, design and use of materials lead to waste-related impacts.

Provide comprehensive insights into the quantity and quality of waste – including its causes, where it is generated and how impacts are managed.

Identify and report on circularity and waste prevention opportunities and actions.

Assess and take responsibility for waste generated throughout the value chain, both upstream and downstream.

The Waste Standard updates, expands and replaces GRI 306: Effluents & Waste 2016. It is applicable for organisations of all sizes, wherever they are in their waste management and reporting practice. The content of GRI 306: Waste 2020 was developed by a 15-member expert working group and underwent an open public comment period in 2019. There is a grace period regarding the use of the previous standard, as GRI 306: Waste 2020 will be effective from 01 January 2022.

The reporting requirements for management approach disclosures 306-1 και 306-2 (that are specific to the waste standard) are as follows:

Disclosure 306-1 Waste generation and significant waste-related impacts

The reporting organization shall report the following information:
a. For the organization’s significant actual and potential waste-related impacts, a description of:
i. the inputs, activities, and outputs that lead or could lead to these impacts;
ii. whether these impacts relate to waste generated in the organization’s own activities or to waste generated upstream or downstream in its value chain.

Disclosure 306-2 Management of significant waste-related impacts

The reporting organization shall report the following information:
a. Actions, including circularity measures, taken to prevent waste generation in the organization’s own activities and upstream and downstream in its value chain, and to manage significant impacts from waste generated.
b. If the waste generated by the organization in its own activities is managed by a third party, a description of the processes used to determine whether the third party manages the waste in line with contractual or legislative obligations.
c. The processes used to collect and monitor waste-related data.

This case study is based on the 2017 Sustainability Report by Lubrizol published on the Global Reporting Initiative Sustainability Disclosure Database that can be found at this link. Through all case studies we aim to demonstrate what CSR/ ESG/ sustainability reporting done responsibly means. Essentially, it means: a) identifying a company’s most important impacts on the environment, economy and society, and b) measuring, managing and changing.

Abstract

Lubrizol is thorough and consistent in classifying and assessing wastes and in auditing its facilities’ waste reduction and waste management efforts, as successful waste management and recycling programmes not only reduce environmental impact, but also provide cost and efficiency benefits for Lubrizol and its customers. In order to treat waste responsibly Lubrizol took action to:

implement a Waste Management Policy

develop and document waste reduction projects across worldwide facilities

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2017 Sustainability Report Lubrizol identified a range of material issues, such as energy, emissions and climate change, information security, community involvement, product health and safety, employee attraction, engagement and retention. Among these, treating waste responsibly stands out as a key material issue for Lubrizol.

Key stakeholder groups Lubrizol engages with:

Stakeholder Group

Functional leaders

Employees

Customers

Peers

Suppliers

Industry associations

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics Lubrizol worked with a third party to engage its internal and external stakeholders in a formal materiality assessment process, that included more than 30 internal and external interviews.

What actions were taken by Lubrizol to treat waste responsibly?

In its 2017 Sustainability Report Lubrizol reports that it took the following actions for treating waste responsibly:

Implementing a Waste Management Policy

Lubrizol’s Waste Management Policy requires that all Lubrizol facilities, subsidiaries and affiliates worldwide (including manufacturing facilities, R&D facilities, warehouses and engine testing facilities) manage their regulated and industrial wastes safely and in accordance with corporate standards and all local applicable laws and regulations. Lubrizol’s facilities are responsible for ensuring that materials are properly classified, identifying ways to reduce their waste volume and selecting appropriate waste disposal facilities. Lubrizol’s corporate vice president of operations oversees the Waste Management Policy, and facility line management and health, safety and environmental site representatives are responsible for its daily administration. Lubrizol’s corporate HSES (Health, Safety, Environment and Security) team provides additional support and oversight, while employees at each location are trained and qualified to perform analyses of waste disposal practices. Lubrizol also participates in the ACC’s (AmericanChemistry Council) Responsible Care initiative, which includes provisions for responsible product design and development that consider product use and safe disposal, as well as promote minimisation of waste and conservation of critical resources at every stage of the product lifecycle.

Developing and documenting waste reduction projects across worldwide facilities

Lubrizol facilities around the world are working to develop and document waste reduction projects to help Lubrizol meet or exceed its goals. They have the flexibility to implement programmes to meet their specific needs and resources, including partnering with other companies and local community organisations on reuse and recycling programmes. Lubrizol’s facilities are also becoming increasingly skilled at collecting data, enabling Lubrizol to better track and measure its progress. Successful programmes occurring at Lubrizol’s facilities around the world include the following:

At Lubrizol’ Mumbai, India, manufacturing facility, a portion of the wastewater is used for gardening onsite, in accordance with local regulations.

Lubrizol’s Mumbai, India, office delivers double impact with its plastics recycling programme by reducing its waste and donating the proceeds from the recycled material to a paediatric hospital to serve local families in need. Lubrizol partners with RaddiConnect, a waste management service that is Mumbai’s first recycling-based fundraising platform for non-governmental organisations (NGOs). (In Hindi, “Raddi” means scrap, waste or garbage.)

The Clifton, New Jersey, plant is focused on recycling large items such as polyethylene drums.

In Louisville, Kentucky, Lubrizol has reduced packaging waste by switching from 50-pound bags to super sacks for some raw materials.

Lubrizol’s Wilmington, Massachusetts, plant has eliminated all landfill waste by working with Lubrizol’s vendors to send any hazardous waste to waste-to-energy plants or incinerators, and installed a trash compactor on-site to make energy from plastic and other non-hazardous waste.

Lubrizol’s Painesville, Ohio, facility reviews off-specification and obsolete materials (typically bulk items) to determine if they can be sold as a product instead of disposed of as waste. Lubrizol has also increased its recycling of used fuel oil.
