What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report Moya identified a range of material issues, such as environmental compliance, anti-corruption, water and effluents, occupational health and safety, socioeconomic compliance. Among these, supporting local communities stands out as a key material issue for Moya.

Stakeholder engagement in accordance with the GRI Standards

What actions were taken by Moya to support local communities?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report Moya reports that it took the following actions for supporting local communities:

Providing access to clean water

Moya believes that everyone ought to have the right to access clean water and, through a water kiosk mechanism, it has provided clean water access assistance for both victims of flood and fire disasters who had been unable to receive clean water. Moya was also involved in the construction of water faucets across 10 locations to ensure access to drinking water. As of 2019, Moya introduced the Clean Water Access Programme as part of its social initiatives. Four major forms of a water distribution model were also developed for various communities:

Master Meter: a temporary solution for fulfilling access to clean water for people living in illegal settlement areas.

Water kiosk: for people who do not have access to water supply, managed by Kelompok Swadaya Pengguna Air (Water User Self Help Group).

Portable tap water: distributed to 10 additional locations.

Provided water to hand washing facilities: distributed specifically across 27 public transport hubs in Jakarta. These hubs include, among others, the Boulevard Utara Station, Pulmos Station, TU Gas Station, UNJ Busway Stop and Kelurahan Ancol Office.

Promoting nature conservation

Moya seeks to make sure that natural resources such as rivers and reservoirs are kept in good conditions for continued usage, and take into account the tangible dependence local communities have on these water bodies. Moya is committed to carrying out tree planting conservation and eco-oriented involvement programmes in an effort to raise awareness towards the significance of conserving the flora and fauna within the local community. In 2019, various community empowerment activities were carried out in line with the implementation of World Water Day 2019.

Educating communities about clean water processes

Together with the initiatives to create environmental awareness, Moya seeks to reach out to communities by educating them about clean water processes. As of FY2019, Moya conducted Educational Programmes targeted towards students from elementary to tertiary levels, customers, and local government-owned water treatment companies (PDAMs) to lay the foundations of understanding the importance of conserving water. A visit to the Buraran and Pulogadung’s Water Treatment Plant enabled these students to be exposed to the advanced innovations of developing clean water systems. These educational programmes aim to translate this knowledge by disseminating a milestone change within community members to learn, appreciate, and value environmental conservation activities.

Supporting victims of natural disasters

On December 2019, Indonesia’s Natural Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) released a report citing that in 2019 there had been 3,622 natural disasters, of which 90 percent (2,699) had been due to hydrometeorological phenomena. More than 475 people were reported dead, with 108 missing. As the size of Moya increases, so does its civic responsibility to help those in need. Donations were given to victims of natural disasters that occur nationwide, as well as local natural disasters in service areas such as flood and fire victims by providing access to clean water supply, as well as providing compensation for other natural disasters. Notably, Moya provided assistance for clean water access through tank cars in areas affected by fire disasters. By FY2019, these acts of assistance enabled a total of 193,000 litres of water to be distributed to victims of fire and those who experienced drought in their respective areas.

Which GRI Standards and corresponding Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been addressed?

The GRI Standard addressed in this case is: Disclosure 413-1 Operations with local community engagement, impact assessments, and development programs

Disclosure 413-1 Operations with local community engagement, impact assessments, and development programs does not correspond to any SDG.

What actions were taken by WBA to empower young people across the globe?

In its 2019 Corporate Social Responsibility Report WBA reports that it took the following actions for empowering young people across the globe:

Addressing children’s mental wellbeing

Boots UK teamed up with BBC Children in Need in fiscal 2019 to address children’s mental wellbeing. In addition, Boots UK and Boots Opticians customers and employees raised more than £1.1 million ($1.4 million) for BBC Children in Need’s annual campaign, bringing the total to £12.7 million ($20.0 million) raised over 15 years to support projects across the UK that focus on disadvantaged children and young people.

Supporting Red Nose Day

During fiscal 2019, Walgreens raised more than $28 million through customer purchases of Red Noses, and customer, employee and supplier contributions. Since 2015 Walgreens has raised more than $100 million for Red Nose Day, supporting programmes that provide health and other services to children in need in the U.S. and around the world.

Partnering with ME to WE Foundation

In fiscal 2019, Walgreens sold more than 800,000 ME to WE products, generating more than $194,000 to support WE programs. Walgreens and ME to WE Foundation launched a new initiative called WE Teachers, which provides America’s educators with free resources to help them and their students succeed in the classroom. WE Teachers includes free online teacher training on issues such as bullying and mental health, and WE Teachers awards, where consumers nominate deserving educators to receive $500 Walgreens gift cards toward the purchase of school supplies. Across WBA, the company also continued its sponsorship of WE Day youth celebrations in the UK and U.S., which have reached some 319,000 youth and educators since 2014. Additionally, Walgreens and nonprofit Vitamin Angels have supported more than 200 million women and children in the U.S. and around the world through their six-year partnership to improve child and maternal health.

Collaborating to provide vaccines

Walgreens and the United Nations (UN) Foundation’s Shot@Life campaign collaborate to provide vaccines globally. Over six years, Walgreens has helped to provide more than 50 million lifesaving polio and measles vaccines to children in developing countries by making a donation to the UN Foundation for every immunisation shot administered. In fiscal 2019 Walgreens committed to continuing the Get a Shot. Give a Shot. programme and to help provide 50 million additional immunisations for children in developing countries by 2024, to bring the total since 2013 to 100 million.

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2019 Sustainable Development Report Smurfit Kappa identified a range of material issues, such as climate change awareness, energy use and emissions, responsible forestry, high-quality and sustainable products. Among these, supporting the communities where it operates stands out as a key material issue for Smurfit Kappa.

Stakeholder engagement in accordance with the GRI Standards

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) defines the Principle of Stakeholder Inclusiveness when identifying material issues (or a company’s most important impacts) as follows:

“The reporting organization shall identify its stakeholders, and explain how it has responded to their reasonable expectations and interests.”

Stakeholders must be consulted in the process of identifying a company’s most important impacts and their reasonable expectations and interests must be taken into account. This is an important cornerstone for CSR / sustainability reporting done responsibly.

Key stakeholder groups Smurfit Kappa engages with:

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics Smurfit Kappa conducted an online survey for internal stakeholders (employees) and interviews with key external stakeholders, such as customers, investors and suppliers.

What actions were taken by Smurfit Kappa to support the communities where it operates?

In its 2019 Sustainable Development Report Smurfit Kappa reports that it took the following actions for supporting the communities where it operates:

Promoting community involvement

Smurfit Kappa always considers the concerns of the wider community at national and international level. Community involvement builds trust and serves as a link to the issues important to Smurfit Kappa. Local general managers are expected to represent the Group as part of the local community and play a positive part in its development. In its philanthropic work, Smurfit Kappa focuses on self-help initiatives, education and health programmes, and contributes through financial donations and volunteering by local employees. The circular economy has an impact on communities as well, and Smurfit Kappa participates widely in local circular operations. Some examples of these are:

Delivering district heating from Smurfit Kappa’s paper mill to the residents of Piteå, Sweden

Supporting municipality water treatment systems with Smurfit Kappa’s effluent that has nutrients that help treat municipality waste water in Nettingsdorf, Austria and Nervión, Spain

Treating municipality waste water in Morava, Czech Republic

Maintaining rural road structures at Smurfit Kappa’s Colombian Forestry Operations

Collecting city-recovered paper in Malaga, Spain

Launching the Smurfit Kappa Foundation

The Smurfit Kappa Foundation was formed in 2011 and supports sustainable projects in the countries where Smurfit Kappa Smurfit Kappa focuses on projects involving disadvantaged children in the areas of health and nutrition, basic care and early education. Smurfit Kappa is particularly interested in projects in which Smurfit Kappa employees or their families are involved and where they would benefit from support from Smurfit Kappa’s Foundation. Any support Smurfit Kappa gives is in addition to and not a substitute for funding such projects might already receive from the local Smurfit Kappa operations. The Foundation’s goal is to end the cycle of poverty and dependence that exists in some of the communities and countries in which Smurfit Kappa operates, using the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as a guide. The projects Smurfit Kappa supports tackle global issues with local relevance, and operate under the ethos: ’Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.’ Thus, Smurfit Kappa supports sustainable projects which involve input from the local community and are capable of becoming self-sufficient in the long-term.

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report Genel identified a range of material issues, such as process safety and asset integrity, anti-bribery and corruption, socio-economic compliance, emergency preparedness. Among these, supporting the communities where it operates stands out as a key material issue for Genel.

Stakeholder engagement in accordance with the GRI Standards

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) defines the Principle of Stakeholder Inclusiveness when identifying material issues (or a company’s most important impacts) as follows:

What actions were taken by Genel to support the communities where it operates?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report Genel reports that it took the following actions for supporting the communities where it operates:

Implementing education projects

Over the years, Genel’s education projects have contributed to the development of the KRI’s educational sector, created more effective learning environments, and emphasised the significance of education in local communities. Various education related projects Genel has enacted over the years include the refurbishment of schools across the region, the construction of a library and nursery, and the purchase of computers, books, school supplies, sports equipment and toys. For example, in 2019, major projects carried out in Qara Dagh included the provision of heaters and fuel to 36 schools attended by 1,754 students in the surrounding region, the renovation of a school attended by 70 students, the donation of toys, the funding of carpeting for two local kindergartens for 110 children, and the supply of sports equipment to a sports club. Genel also continues to organise and provide educational and training programmes, teaching skills that are mutually beneficial for locals and Genel by creating a future workforce. In 2016, Genel’s CSR department embarked on a training initiative to provide English language and IT training to local residents. To date, a total of 116 local men and women have benefited from this training. In collaboration with the local Koya, Sulaimaniyah and Erbil universities, Genel also provides technical training and capacity building for engineering students. In 2019, 262 students participated in Genel’s summer training programme at its Taq Taq site.

Supporting health care

In the health sector, Genel has undertaken a number of projects over the years that directly contribute to the development of the local health sector and have had a direct positive impact on local and regional communities. Genel has long supported the Hiwa Cancer Centre in Sulaymaniyah, firstly through the purchasing of high-grade medical equipment in 2013 and then through the construction of a new bacteriology laboratory in 2014. Every year Genel also sends its Taq Taq medical team to conduct visits on a biweekly basis to the 15 villages that surround the asset. Approximately 45 to 50 medical visits are made per year, allowing for anywhere between 450 to 500 patients to receive medical care. In 2019, Genel conducted 47 medical visits and provided medical support to 437 patients.

Promoting economic development

By sponsoring economic development and training projects for local community members, Genel is demonstrating how the benefits of the energy sector can bolster a diversity of supplementary economic sectors that further generate employment opportunities. The greatest demand Genel has from local people, and the most direct way it can improve their lives, is to provide employment. By employing and buying locally whenever possible, and requiring that its contractors do the same, Genel can make an immediate difference to local families. In this regard, Genel has developed a Local Content Policy (LCP) and a Local Workforce Development Plan. Its LCP ensures that Genel localises its operations in accordance with its PSC obligations. The Policy document and guidelines include the basic terms and conditions to be applied when working with local companies and how Genel responds to the MNR’s (Ministry of Natural Resources) requests applying its directives, regulations and bylaws. The aim of this Policy is to give local contractors equal opportunity to provide services to Genel’s operations and to assure that the maximum number of locals can be employed through Genel’s supply chain. Genel also supports local enterprises, including local vendors and suppliers in their efforts to develop capabilities in line with international oilfield standards and to hire locally as much as possible. For example, Genel has developed and implemented plans and strategies to improve the technical qualifications of local community-centred companies to support them through the tendering process. Genel has also promoted the Local Content Policy with 3C companies which has resulted in the increasing number of local hiring. Finally, Genel prioritises 3C companies in the tendering process for services that do not require technical qualifications. In doing so, Genel increased the financial capacity of 3C companies and makes sure that economic benefits are felt by local communities. Genel is committed to the utilisation of local workforce development programmes which employ nationals in its projects, as their participation adds value to their local economies. For example, in 2019, of the 326 permanent staff members at TTPOCO, 241 were local nationals.

What actions were taken by EDC to support surrounding communities?

In its 2018 Sustainability Report EDC reports that it took the following actions for supporting surrounding communities:

Partnering with universities to build skills

EDC partners with universities to promote its industry, build skills, and create a future pipeline of talent. EDC’s involvement is manifested in a strategic partnership with leading universities to work towards investment in skills as an important element in faster-growing markets. EDC’s key partnerships include Cairo University, Canal University, Al-Azhar University, Suez University, and the American University in Cairo. EDC had two types of training sessions for a university student: A fully engaging three-day technical programme tailored for petroleum section students and a two-day leadership workshop open for all faculties. The sessions were delivered to 158 students free of charge by EDCTC instructors. The programmes aim to support University Education in Egypt through:

Inviting students from the faculty of Petroleum Engineering of both national and private universities to visit EDC premises and to get hands on experience on the drilling work.

Giving students an overview on the operations process and the supporting departments through presentations conducted by volunteers from each department.

Introducing students to a number of practical training methods.

Raising awareness of the student’s leadership roles in different work environments.

Organising blood donation drives

EDC organises two blood donation drives per year. These drives aim to:

Allow EDC employees to offer blood for the Egyptian communities.

Rejuvenate the health and wellbeing of the donors themselves.

Secure Protocols with the National Blood Transfusion Service to assist a percentage of EDC employees and their direct family members with blood bags in case of emergencies.

Supporting charity organisations

EDC supports charity organisations such as Meshwar Foundation and Medicine for all. These organisations are not supported financially, but through employees’ item donations. Such donations are made through periodic campaigns such as the Winter Donation Campaign, the Back to School Campaign or supporting Upper Egypt Villages Campaign. Items are collected in donation boxes placed around the EDC main premises building and sent out to the targeted foundation.

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report SCB identified a range of material issues, such as corporate governance and risk management, customer experience, data governance and cyber security, responsible lending. Among these, promoting financial literacy for retail customers and the general public stands out as a key material issue for SCB.

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics SCB engaged with selected groups of stakeholders through in-depth interviews to obtain suggestions, feedback and information on economic, social and environmental material topics.

What actions were taken by SCB to promote financial literacy for retail customers and the general public?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report SCB reports that it took the following actions for promoting financial literacy for retail customers and the general public:

Developing and improving the SCB website

SCB’s website has undergone constant development and improvement so as to become the information hub for SCB’s products and services as well as a conduit of financial knowledge for customers and website visitors. Here, SCB publishes articles on a wide variety of topics related to personal finance and business management which are easy to understand and relevant to day-to-day lives, such as tips for paying off mortgage quickly, credit card debt management, investment portfolio design, and marketing in the digital age, as well as creating motivation and success. These articles also weave in content on financial access and appropriate use of products and services to reinforce customers’ and the public’s understanding. Furthermore, SCB also promotes financial literacy by creating content in the form of articles, infographics, videos, or short-movies, and creating engagement in social media which have attracted a lot of interest and many followers.

Partnering with Mahidol University to build financial management capabilities

SCB has partnered with Mahidol University on the “Smart University” project under the “Digital Convergence University” concept to build financial management capabilities and help universities transition to the digital economy. This project seeks to build financial and investment foundation for university students and staff by enhancing skills, knowledge, and exposure to real experiences. Under this partnership, SCB and Mahidol University have worked together to create and develop the following initiatives:

“SCB Investment Lab”: The first virtual investment lab in Thailand that creates learning experiences with digital technology and virtual trading experiment.

“E-learning”: Mahidol platforms and apps featuring training from highly-regarded financial experts in various fields who not only educate but also motivate students.

“Mahidol Virtual Classroom Powered by SCB”: The first smart university classroom in Thailand featuring interactive teaching and learning among four university campuses, which are Salaya campus, Kanchanaburi campus, Nakhon Sawan campus, and Amnaj Chareon campus, to support borderless education between faculty members and students.

“We Mahidol App”: Mahidol’s official app that connects students and faculty members anywhere anytime to facilitate learning and lifestyle on campus with features such as class scheduling, attendance checking, event calendar, campus news and activities. Moreover, “We Mahidol App” also serves as a knowledge and communication hub and offers a payment function that works for both on-campus and off-campus stores to support the government agenda on a cashless society.

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics, Fifth Third distributed a survey to representatives from its stakeholder groups.

What actions were taken by Fifth Third to promote financial education?

In its 2019 Environmental, Social & Governance Report Fifth Third reports that it took the following actions for promoting financial education:

Launching the Fifth Third Bank Young Bankers Club

The Fifth Third Bank Young Bankers Club (YBC) is Fifth Third’s signature programme developed in 2004 for fifth-graders. Over the past 15 years, more than 28,000 students graduated from YBC. Most were taught by Fifth Third volunteers who visited elementary school classrooms to teach the difference between needs and wants, money basics and to underscore the importance of their education. In 2019, the programme underwent an update and will transition into a newer, more dynamic programme in 2021 that will be more relevant to today’s students and better establish a strong financial foundation for the future.

Supporting $martPath

The Fifth Third Foundation has also supported $martPath, developed with the University of Cincinnati Economics Centre, for students from first grade through eighth grade. Since 2017, 430,200 students in Ohio, Florida and Michigan were educated through $martPath, an award-winning digital platform that uses animated characters and stories to impart critical thinking, math, economics and personal finance skills.

Introducing the Fifth Third Finance Academy

The Fifth Third Finance Academy offers two courses: foundational finance and entrepreneurship, to high school students throughout the Bank’s footprint states. The programme is focused on high-need students and schools, with over half of the students coming from underserved communities. In the 2018-19 school year, over 163,000 students completed more than 400,000 hours of learning through more than 2,200 Finance Academy courses. To date, more than 453,000 students have taken Finance Academy courses and completed over 1.1 million hours of learning. In the programme’s second year, Fifth Third reported a 73% learning gain in financial education and a 93% learning gain in entrepreneurship. In 2019, Fifth Third also offered Finance Academy to students at Florida A&M University, a public HBCU (Historically black colleges and universities) in Tallahassee. Fifth Third also provides $70,000 in scholarships each academic year to help students meet their education and career goals. At the end of the 2019-2020 academic year, this totalled $210,000 in scholarship awards. When schools were closed due to the lockdowns brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Fifth Third worked to make all of its Finance Academy courses available for free to students throughout its Consumer Bank footprint—regardless of whether or not they were previously Finance Academy schools. This ensured that financial education could continue during the pandemic. Additionally, courses designed for adult learners, typically offered on Fifth Third’s eBus, were made available to the public at no cost, as was the NextJob Job Seeker’s Toolkit, job training services typically available only for Fifth Third customers.

Offering Fifth Third Empower U

Fifth Third’s financial education course for adults is called Fifth Third Empower U. These courses are taught by Fifth Third’s bankers on-site at various companies with Fifth Third’s community partners. They include a financial check-up, as well as classes that teach financial health, investments and planning, insurance planning, homeownership and college savings. Fifth Third has reached 123,000 people through the programme since 2012.

Launching Retirement University

Providing a holistic approach to retirement planning, Fifth Third’s Retirement University is a free educational programme to help consumers prepare for all aspects of retirement, from income needs to second careers. Lessons include planning and investments, retirement income, health care needs and life-stage planning. Fifth Third financial professionals also are available to answer attendees’ questions.

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2018 Sustainability Report SET identified a range of material issues, such as good corporate and capital market governance, sustainability risk management, developing the quality of listed companies, developing products, services and innovations for sustainability. Among these, promoting financial literacy stands out as a key material issue for SET.

Key stakeholder groups SET engages with:

To identify and prioritise material topics SET engaged with its stakeholders through the following channels:

In its 2018 Sustainability Report SET reports that it took the following actions for promoting financial literacy:

Establishing the Investment Discovery Museum

SET’s Investment Discovery Museum, which was developed with the concept of universal design, presents information on finance and investments in a ‘discovery museum’ format, which focuses on offering fun and engaging experiences for visitors through hands-on interactive exhibitions, such as games and stock simulation programmes. The Museum also tells the story of the historical development of the Thai capital market from past to present day. In 2018, the Museum welcomed over 48,000 visitors, a 19% increase from 2017, and carried out the following key activities:

Organised a special exhibition, “Saving through DCA”, to inspire and promote regular investments via Dollar-Cost Averaging (DCA). The exhibition focused on applying multimedia communications formats to allow visitors to revel in their learning experiences and to try their hands at planning DCAs.

Organised a mobile exhibition, “INVESTORY Mobile Exhibition on School”, to disseminate knowledge on finance and saving to educational institutions, by bringing information, technology, and some portions of the INVESTORY exhibits to 15 schools in Bangkok and the surrounding areas. More than 44,000 students participated in the activities.

Creating the Maruey Library

The Maruey Library is a finance and investment knowledge centre for the Thai capital market. For the library, SET has focused on developing a digital work system to handle services efficiently, including by providing a self-service system for borrowing and returning library resources using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), digital bookshelves and digital content, and an online library service that facilitates the convenience for library users. More than 184,000 people used the library in 2018. SET has also developed the “Maruey eLibrary” application to allow users to easily access library resources including eBooks, eMagazines and multimedia anywhere, anytime.

Promoting financial literacy for youth

In 2018, to promote financial literacy for youth SET:

Organised the 10th Diamond Crown Economics Competition for school and university students to develop their basic skills and knowledge on economics, finance, insurance, and the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy. To date, there have been more than 43,000 students who participated in the Competition, and in 2018 it was attended by 5,810 students from 1,169 schools and 55 universities.

Supported financial and investment knowledge-building for teachers in 101 educational institutions throughout Thailand through the SET University Networking Project, and supported the SET-eLearning online courses on finance and investment planning, to be used as accompanying materials for teaching and learning.

Promoting financial literacy for retirement

Promoting a better understanding of efficient financial planning for retirement among over 40 million working age individuals would help to mitigate the impacts of an ageing society, reduce their reliance on government services, reduce financial inequalities, and ultimately enhance Thailand’s qualities of life and economic prosperity. SET has found that the minimum amount of money that Thai people should save for their retirement is 4.36 million baht. However, up to 63% of the working population are not in the retirement savings system, and thus there is a possibility that they will not have enough money for use once they retire. In consideration of this problem, SET launched the Happy Money, Happy Retirement Project, to build financial planning disciplines for workers in formal and informal economies, including the underprivileged and elderly. The project, with a central concept of “Happy Retirement is Achievable”, disseminated financial planning information and related tools in an easy-to-understand manner through online and offline channels, to stimulate inspiration for real-life application. In 2018, SET partnered with various national organisations to expand the benefits of the Happy Money, Happy Retirement Project to working people across Thailand. Key achievements were as follows:

Spread knowledge on financial planning for the formal labour force through training seminars, including a seminar on saving through provident funds (PVD) and retirement mutual funds (RMF). A total of 327 organisations from the public and private sector as well as state-owned enterprises participated in the project. This increased by 131 organisations from 2017 and covered over 831,000 workers in the formal workforce, a 23% increase in participation from 2017. Overall, employees of these organisations were helped to reduce liability and increase their savings.

Spread knowledge to the informal labour force, the underprivileged, and elderly through financial planning training, which was attended by over 2,963 interested individuals. In addition, SET partnered with the Thai Health Promotion Foundation to develop a model “Happy Money” community at Phra Pradaeng district, Samut Prakan province. This involved developing the “Financial Satisfaction” Manual for the informal labour force and providing trainings to community leaders so that they can become “Happy Money Mentors” in their own communities. Moreover, SET collaborated with The Thai Bankers’ Association and The Thai Red Cross Society to launch the “Happy Money Trainer” project for disabled groups.

Communicated knowledge on financial planning through online and offline public communications channels; the Happy Money, Happy Retirement Project website had over 6.2 million views.

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report Australis Seafoods identified a range of material issues, such as product safety and quality, integrity and transparency, talent management, environmental footprint, human rights. Among these, supporting surrounding communities stands out as a key material issue for Australis Seafoods.

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics Australis Seafoods engaged with its stakeholders through stakeholder surveys.

In its 2019 Sustainability Report Australis Seafoods reports that it took the following actions for supporting surrounding communities:

Creating the Salmon Social Initiative

Australis, together with 10 other companies in the industry, created the Salmon Social Initiative (SSI), with the aim of jointly improving the social and environmental standards of operations, beyond current regulations. During 2019, Australis Seafoods signed a decalogue for a responsible relationship with the communities, which included 10 specific commitments based on:

Respect and care for the environment: Australis Seafoods responsibly manages the social and environmental impacts of its operations, ensuring that they are compatible with the natural environment and local culture.

Building relationships of trust: Australis Seafoods promotes spaces for the exchange of information, participation and dialogue, which allow the building of relationships of trust with local communities.

Contributing to development: Australis Seafoods seeks to contribute to local development and the generation of shared value in the territories, according to the reality of each one of them.

Supporting ancestral communities

As a company, Australis Seafoods is convinced that the cultural wealth of its ancestral communities is an essential pillar for the development of people. Rescuing and transcending their history was one of the focuses of work for 2019, through intercultural meetings between the Mapuche community and Kawésqar, originating in the region of La Araucanía and Magallanes, respectively. Both groups visited each other to learn about their cultures, customs and traditions. From visits to Australis Seafoods’ facilities, Australis Seafoods was able to discover their life story from first source, recovering the valuable tradition of oral transmission from generation to generation.

Improving access to healthcare

The close relationship generated with its communities has allowed Australis Seafoods to see their reality and assimilate their main needs, engaging with them in the search for solutions. In the Aysén region, Australis Seafoods signed a collaboration agreement with the regional Health Service, which aims to facilitate the entry of health personnel in charge of medical operations, to the Huichas Islands. A sector with difficult connectivity and which had not previously been accessed by these medical operations. The agreement also allows to provide boats for the transfer of patients in a state of emergency and to give access to the use of satellite telephony, contributing to a better quality of life.

Strengthening local entrepreneurship

To promote local entrepreneurship, Australis Seafoods created a labour integration programme aimed at its communities between the regions VIII and XII, developing courses in different trades, such as carpentry on pallets, cooking, pastry and bakery, providing skills and abilities to people which will generate income through entrepreneurship and the possibility of diversification of work areas. In addition, Australis Seafoods works with groups of fishermen in its communities, supporting the diversification of their sector to other areas such as tourism, innovation in productivity and providing added value to their products. They also had the opportunity to market their products in Australis Seafoods’ casinos and sales rooms, which creates growth opportunities for groups that interact with the company. Additionally, for the third consecutive year, Australis Seafoods organised the “Australis Summer Super Cup 2019”, an instance that allowed nearly 372 boys and 84 girls to be the sports stars of a great summer party, where native entrepreneurs had a space to position and promote business development at the craft fair that was carried out during the day.

Promoting recycling

In May 2019, Australis inaugurated the Clean Point, located next to its corporate office in Puerto Varas. One of the main objectives of this initiative is to provide a recycling space to the Puertovarian community, where they can have the following items:

Papers and cardboard

Tetrapack

Expanded polystyrene

Transparent and coloured PET

Tin cans

In the framework of starting the operation of the Clean Point, Australis Seafoods carried out environmental education workshops, in conjunction with the Municipality of Puerto Varas, for the community and collaborators. The focus of these trainings was to provide tools so that everyone could learn to recycle their items at home, but also promote the reuse and reduction of waste.

78% of the world’s 250 largest companies report in accordance with the GRI Standards

SustainCase was primarily created to demonstrate, through case studies, the importance of dealing with a company’s most important impacts in a structured way, with use of the GRI Standards. To show how today’s best-run companies are achieving economic, social and environmental success – and how you can too.

Research by well-recognised institutions is clearly proving that responsible companies can look to the future with optimism.

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2019 Impact Report Bloomberg identified a range of material issues, such as customer privacy/ data security, employee engagement/ diversity & inclusion, energy, risk management/ compliance. Among these, supporting global communities through education and training initiatives stands out as a key material issue for Bloomberg.

Key stakeholder groups Bloomberg engages with:

What actions were taken by Bloomberg to support global communities through education and training initiatives?

In its 2019 Impact Report Bloomberg reports that it took the following actions for supporting global communities through education and training initiatives:

Promoting STEM skills

Bloomberg believes in the power of data and technology and has developed programmes to use the skills of its employees to engage and educate the next generation, with Bloomberg engineers serving as mentors through a variety of Corporate Philanthropy programmes around the globe. In 2019, Bloomberg held regular Python coding workshops, designed and led by engineers in its New York City office, to make sure a diverse spectrum of students developed the skills they needed to unlock opportunity and drive progress. Bloomberg planned to expand this programme to its offices worldwide in 2020, and also hosted a Girls Go Tech boot camp in its Hong Kong office, helping to inspire female students to consider careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Additionally, through FIRST Robotics, Bloomberg’s engineers coached teams of high school students in a year-long project to design, build, code and operate robots to compete in a series of challenges.

Increasing access to financial careers

Bloomberg is committed to making the world of finance more accessible and diverse and, in 2019, launched Girls Take Wall Street, a day of workshops, panel discussions and motivational talks for high school girls with women leaders in finance and business, including Bloomberg employees. Bloomberg then expanded the Girls Take Finance programme to Mumbai and Ahmedabad and made plans to expand to 12 cities globally in 2020. Bloomberg also launched the Bloomberg Startup Diverse Leaders programme in London, connecting 28 high-potential economics and business students from underrepresented communities with mentors from Bloomberg’s Black Professional and Pan-Asian employee communities.

Providing financial journalism training

Bloomberg’s Global Business and Financial Journalism Training Programme includes a range of courses designed to strengthen reporting on financial markets and global economies around the world, including in China, India, Dubai and several African countries. The programme includes: academic/university-affiliated curriculum leading to a completion certificate or a master’s or undergraduate degree; training for working journalists and college students co-designed by Bloomberg reporters and editors; and community and philanthropy partnerships focused on increasing interest in journalism careers and diversity in business journalism. In 2019, the Global Business and Financial Journalism Training Programme trained a total of 252 students. A key initiative of the programme is the Bloomberg Media Initiative Africa (BMIA) financial journalism training programme, a six-month course that, since 2014, has trained 652 journalists and mid-level professionals from 14 African countries. In 2019, Bloomberg expanded the programme to five new countries — Ghana, Zambia, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire and Tanzania —, graduating 84 journalists from Ghana and Zambia.
