What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2022 Comprehensive Report Stryker identified a range of material issues, such as climate change, employee and patient health and safety, access to quality healthcare, ethics, compliance, anticorruption and antitrust. Among these, promoting sustainability among its suppliers stands out as a key material issue for Stryker.

Stakeholder engagement in accordance with the GRI Standards

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) defines the Principle of Stakeholder Inclusiveness when identifying material issues (or a company’s most important impacts) as follows:

“The reporting organization shall identify its stakeholders, and explain how it has responded to their reasonable expectations and interests.”

Stakeholders must be consulted in the process of identifying a company’s most important impacts and their reasonable expectations and interests must be taken into account. This is an important cornerstone for CSR / sustainability reporting done responsibly.

Key stakeholder groups Stryker engages with:

Stakeholder Group

Employees

Customers

Investors

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics Stryker engaged with its stakeholders through interviews and surveys.

What actions were taken by Stryker to promote sustainability among its suppliers?

In its 2022 Comprehensive Report Stryker reports that it took the following actions for promoting sustainability among its suppliers:

Implementing a Supplier Code of Conduct

Any supplier doing business with Stryker is required to adhere to its Supplier Code of Conduct through Stryker’s supplier contracts and purchase order terms and conditions. The Supplier Code communicates Stryker’s expectations for suppliers in key areas including:

General business and ethics

Human rights

Labour and employment

Health, safety and environment

Intellectual property and data

Stryker’s Direct Procurement Team completes annual training to assist suppliers in meeting their obligations under the Supplier Code. In 2022, 98.6 percent of the team completed this training.

Assessing suppliers’ ESG performance

Stryker actively engages direct suppliers on their ESG performance and initiatives. Stryker segments its direct suppliers based on their overall importance to its business and performs evaluations against publicly available data to identify suppliers that may inherently be at higher risk for ESG-related issues, based on their industry or region where they operate. Using the results of these activities, Stryker engages the identified in-scope suppliers in ESG performance assessments through recognised third-party audit and ratings platforms that focus on policies, governance, key performance indicators (KPIs) and other evidence of integrated processes addressing human rights and labour, environmental, ethics and sustainable procurement risks. The assessment results are integrated into overall supplier risk scores, enabling easier risk identification and mitigation, procurement decisions and open dialogue about these topics during supplier reviews. Throughout 2022, Procurement Team members who manage in-scope suppliers received training on Stryker’s strategy and guidance on how to engage with suppliers on ESG performance topics. The completed assessments identified opportunities for continued supplier development but did not result in findings that required Stryker’s immediate intervention.

Abstract

WBA implemented and progressed a number of tools and programmes during fiscal 2021 to further its commitments to increase the sustainability of its owned brand products and packaging, also continuing its rigorous ethical assessments programme to combat the risk of modern slavery and other such practices in its supply chain. In order to promote sustainability across its supply chain WBA took action to:

implement a Supplier Sustainability Programme

promote ethical business conduct

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2021 Environmental, Social and Governance Report WBA identified a range of material issues, such as access to affordable and quality healthcare, product safety, diversity, equity and inclusion, data privacy and security, employee health, safety and well-being. Among these, promoting sustainability across its supply chain stands out as a key material issue for WBA.

Key stakeholder groups WBA engages with:

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics WBA conducted surveys with nearly 300 internal and external stakeholders, followed up by approximately 45 interviews. External stakeholder groups surveyed included non-governmental organisations, stockholders, academics, government agencies, community representatives and organisations, suppliers, media and industry groups. In addition, WBA surveyed some 6,000 customers in the U.S., UK, Chile, Mexico, Norway and Thailand.

What actions were taken by WBA to promote sustainability across its supply chain?

In its 2021 Environmental, Social and Governance Report WBA reports that it took the following actions for promoting sustainability across its supply chain:

Implementing a Supplier Sustainability Programme

WBA’s owned brand global Supplier Sustainability Programme was launched in April 2021, aiming to enhance its sustainability agenda and drive improvements across the entire supply chain through an online platform for data collection, analysis, reporting and scoring. The programme uses THESIS, developed by nonprofit organisation The Sustainability Consortium, a holistic sustainability assessment tool set to gauge supplier practices, performance and management on energy, water, ethics and more. For example, the system captures whether a supplier has a chemicals policy in place, or an emissions reduction target. One advantage of the tool is that it is also used by other large retailers, which minimises survey fatigue among vendors. The product category specific assessments in THESIS allow WBA’s teams to benchmark its suppliers’ sustainability performance and by proxy WBA owned brand sustainability performance. These quantifiable, comparative supplier sustainability results will provide WBA owned brand sourcing teams with the information necessary to select the best product suppliers with sustainability agendas and targets that complement WBA’s More than 100 of WBA’s highest spend owned-brand product suppliers have signed up to the programme and have completed their THESIS assessments identifying their environmental and social initiatives and opportunities. This includes suppliers based in Asia, Europe and the Americas, across many of WBA’s product categories, from health and wellness, to beauty and personal care, household and food.

Promoting ethical business conduct

Under the minimum requirements of its ethical trading standards programme, WBA expects suppliers to operate in accordance with the core principles outlined in its Supplier Code of Conduct and to be open and transparent to WBA’s assessment of their compliance with the code. Through its ethical sourcing programme, led by teams of ethical trading experts with the support of auditors and a small number of pre-approved third-parties, WBA makes sure owned brand suppliers are aware of and compliant with WBA ethical standards and expectations. This is achieved through a rigorous onboarding process for all owned brand suppliers that was enhanced during fiscal 2021 and is supported by a supplier training webinar designed to explain WBA’s ethical standards and assessment requirements, share opportunities for suppliers to improve social and environmental compliance, and provide a forum for suppliers to raise questions. 100 percent of owned brand suppliers, new and existing, along with GNFR (Goods Not For Resale) suppliers onboarded to WBA’s purchase order system via Global Risk Management Solutions (GRMS), are screened using social criteria. Supplier training webinars are held regularly in English, Mandarin and Spanish. During fiscal 2021, 23 supplier training webinars were held in English, with a total of 336 suppliers completing the training. Additionally, five webinars were held in Mandarin, with 142 suppliers completing the training. WBA monitors owned brand supplier compliance by assessing factory social and environmental performance using a detailed grading matrix based on internationally recognised standards, including the Ethical Trading Initiative Base Code and International Labor Organization Conventions and Recommendations. Factories with identified noncompliances are required to complete corrective action plans to resolve the issue and are re-assessed using a risk-based approach focused on improvement and compliance. As the COVID-19 pandemic limited WBA’s ability to conduct onsite assessments in areas heavily impacted by the pandemic, WBA developed additional approaches to monitor supplier compliance, including self-assessment questionnaires, reviews of third-party audit reports, remote confirmation of the resolution of identified noncompliances, and remote virtual audits.

What actions were taken by WBA to empower young people across the globe?

In its 2019 Corporate Social Responsibility Report WBA reports that it took the following actions for empowering young people across the globe:

Addressing children’s mental wellbeing

Boots UK teamed up with BBC Children in Need in fiscal 2019 to address children’s mental wellbeing. In addition, Boots UK and Boots Opticians customers and employees raised more than £1.1 million ($1.4 million) for BBC Children in Need’s annual campaign, bringing the total to £12.7 million ($20.0 million) raised over 15 years to support projects across the UK that focus on disadvantaged children and young people.

Supporting Red Nose Day

During fiscal 2019, Walgreens raised more than $28 million through customer purchases of Red Noses, and customer, employee and supplier contributions. Since 2015 Walgreens has raised more than $100 million for Red Nose Day, supporting programmes that provide health and other services to children in need in the U.S. and around the world.

Partnering with ME to WE Foundation

In fiscal 2019, Walgreens sold more than 800,000 ME to WE products, generating more than $194,000 to support WE programs. Walgreens and ME to WE Foundation launched a new initiative called WE Teachers, which provides America’s educators with free resources to help them and their students succeed in the classroom. WE Teachers includes free online teacher training on issues such as bullying and mental health, and WE Teachers awards, where consumers nominate deserving educators to receive $500 Walgreens gift cards toward the purchase of school supplies. Across WBA, the company also continued its sponsorship of WE Day youth celebrations in the UK and U.S., which have reached some 319,000 youth and educators since 2014. Additionally, Walgreens and nonprofit Vitamin Angels have supported more than 200 million women and children in the U.S. and around the world through their six-year partnership to improve child and maternal health.

Collaborating to provide vaccines

Walgreens and the United Nations (UN) Foundation’s Shot@Life campaign collaborate to provide vaccines globally. Over six years, Walgreens has helped to provide more than 50 million lifesaving polio and measles vaccines to children in developing countries by making a donation to the UN Foundation for every immunisation shot administered. In fiscal 2019 Walgreens committed to continuing the Get a Shot. Give a Shot. programme and to help provide 50 million additional immunisations for children in developing countries by 2024, to bring the total since 2013 to 100 million.

What actions were taken by Mediclinic to promote information security?

In its 2020 Sustainable Development Report Mediclinic reports that it took the following actions for promoting information security:

Implementing a Group InfoSec programme

Mediclinic implements an elaborate Group InfoSec programme to optimally manage, monitor, detect and respond to InfoSec. The Group InfoSec Committee is represented by all divisions through dedicated Divisional Information Security Officers, while the proceedings of this committee are governed and informed through information security best practices sourced from several internationally acclaimed information and cyber security institutions. The Group InfoSec programme is based on the following guiding principles:

Adopting a risk-based approach towards cyber threats, which considers the likelihood of any risk materialising as well as its potential impact and measures for prevention and detection.

Expanding responsibility for cyber security beyond ICT to the whole organisation.

Ensuring end-to-end security across business processes, for mobile workers and teams as well as for data flows across geographic borders.

Implementing cyber-security-by-design, i.e. provision for effective protection against cyber threats from the outset when ICT capabilities are acquired or developed.

Promoting data privacy

Mediclinic reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the personal data of its stakeholders by embarking on an extensive Group-wide data privacy project to align and ensure compliance with all relevant data protection legislation, as may be applicable in the various countries of operation, including the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (‘GDPR’), widely regarded as the gold standard for data protection. The Group Privacy and Data Protection Policy has been reviewed to ensure alignment to the GDPR standards and various initiatives are underway to ensure that core components are compliant with the GDPR framework. The project has been rolled out to the entire Group to ensure that other applicable data protection legislation is also complied with, or where no such specific legislations exist (i.e. Namibia), GDPR standards are complied with as a minimum.

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2019 Corporate Citizenship Report Cardinal Health identified a range of material issues, such as ethics and compliance, data privacy and security, environmental emissions and impact, supply chain management. Among these, promoting patient safety stands out as a key material issue for Cardinal Health.

Key stakeholder groups Cardinal Health engages with:

Stakeholder Group

Standard-setters

Peer companies

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics Cardinal Health asked internal stakeholders to respond to a survey to assess their level of concern about each topic.

What actions were taken by Cardinal Health to promote patient safety?

In its 2019 Corporate Citizenship Report Cardinal Health reports that it took the following actions for promoting patient safety:

Implementing a quality management system

Cardinal Health’s quality management system is built on the requirements and guiding principles of patient and user safety, regulatory compliance and continuous improvement. Cardinal Health implements quality procedures that take into account the regulatory requirements for the markets worldwide where it manufactures or distributes products. Cardinal Health tracks quality performance in its businesses and within its sites with metrics that are regularly reviewed at sites, in management review meetings and as part of its goal-setting process, also maintaining quality certification to global industry standards. More than 100 of Cardinal Health’s manufacturing, distribution and other operating facilities are certified to ISO 13485:2016 (Medical Devices — Quality Management Systems) standards.

Providing product quality training

Cardinal Health employees responsible for product quality are trained in current good manufacturing practices. Non-manufacturing teams receive product training, including regulatory and quality standards, as appropriate.

Measuring and monitoring effectiveness

Cardinal Health conducts internal audits to verify that its global quality system conforms to internal and external requirements and is effectively implemented and maintained. Worldwide health authorities also review Cardinal Health’s performance to ensure quality and compliance. During FY19, Cardinal Health had more than 300 external regulatory inspections across all its businesses.

Applying corrective and preventive action (CAPA) systems

Cardinal Health maintains corrective and preventive action (CAPA) systems that assist it in investigating actual or potential product quality or safety issues to find root causes and prevent occurrences or recurrences. Cardinal Health initiates corrective actions (such as product advisories, field actions or recalls) as necessary to help ensure quality and safety issues are quickly and effectively addressed.

Meeting product materials restrictions

Cardinal Health’s global strategies and programmes help to make sure that it meets product materials restrictions, including the EU RoHS2 Directive, EU REACH Regulation and others. As part of its product quality reviews, Cardinal Health consults several lists, including California Proposition 65, EU Medical Devices Regulation, EU REACH Substances of Very High Concern, EU RoHS and Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.

Implementing supplier quality programmes

Cardinal Health has supplier quality programmes for the materials and components used in the products that it self-manufactures and the selection, qualification and oversight of suppliers that manufacture products on its behalf. These programmes focus on patient safety and regulatory compliance. Controls such as quality system audits and CAPAs are designed to provide assurance that the facilities manufacturing the materials or components that Cardinal Health procures have quality systems in place, so that final product complies with its specifications and adheres to regulatory requirements. Cardinal Health conducts routine quality audits of suppliers as required by law.

Which GRI Standards and corresponding Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been addressed?

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2018 Corporate Social Responsibility Report Humana identified a range of material issues, such as GHG emissions, member heath, anti-corruption, associate well-being, member privacy, product responsibility. Among these, promoting an inclusive and diverse workplace stands out as a key material issue for Humana.

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics Humana engaged, through interviews and surveys, with more than 1,000 stakeholders – including employees, members, healthcare providers, suppliers and community partners –, to learn what corporate responsibility topics were of greatest importance to them.

What actions were taken by Humana to promote an inclusive and diverse workplace?

In its 2018 Corporate Social Responsibility Report Humana reports that it took the following actions for promoting an inclusive and diverse workplace:

Providing Network Resource Groups

Humana has nine employee-led and employee-driven Network Resource Groups (NRGs), open to all employees. Each NRG provides members with the opportunity to network and grow as a professional while contributing to Humana’s inclusive culture and helping to drive marketplace initiatives. NRGs are an important part of Humana’s inclusion and diversity efforts, and they continue to grow. Almost 30 percent of Humana employees are a member of at least one NRG, and new NRGs are created to support employees’ emerging needs. In 2018, Humana formed GenUs, a multi-generational NRG, to help employees create and build intergenerational connections and to celebrate uniqueness. GenUs helps Humana employees better understand each other and break down generational barriers that suppress diversity of thought. Often, the NRGs find ways to collaborate and better serve Humana employees’ needs. The Kinship Care Support Group, cosponsored by GenUs and the Caregivers NRG, is a safe place for employees to share their caregiving experiences and learn from others.

Creating Inclusion & Diversity Local Councils

Humana’s Inclusion & Diversity Local Councils cultivate community at Humana’s office locations across the US. Wherever Humana works, volunteer I&D Local Councils create activities and events that help employees experience a sense of inclusion and belonging, cultivating uniqueness. Each location’s council tailors its activities based on local goals and community preferences. This can include everything, from promoting membership in Humana’s NRGs, planning Inclusion & Diversity Days, partnering with Well-being Champions and ambassadors, connecting employees to volunteer time off activities with Bold Goal community partners, and building relationships with partners in the area. I&D Local Councils work to foster community within Humana’s changing workforce. When the councils were first formed, approximately 10 percent of employees worked outside of Humana offices. In 2018, that number rose to about 40 percent and could be as high as 90 percent of employees working outside of an office, depending on the team and role. In 2018, Humana established nine new I&D Local Councils.

Promoting pay equity

Humana’s pay philosophy is designed to motivate and reward its employees for their skill development, demonstration of Humana’s values and performance. This may include base pay, incentive pay, overtime and other supplemental pay. With the introduction of Humana’s Associate Incentive Plan in 2018, all full and part-time employees participate in an incentive programme at a minimum of four percent of base salary, based on company and individual performance.

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2018 Corporate Social Responsibility Report Walgreens Boots Alliance identified a range of material issues, such as access to affordable and quality healthcare, product safety, consumer health education and marketing, employee health, safety and wellbeing, data privacy and security. Among these, treating waste responsibly stands out as a key material issue for Walgreens Boots Alliance.

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics Walgreens Boots Alliance carried out 60 in-depth stakeholder interviews and, through a third party, conducted surveys with thousands of customers in its two largest markets, the U.S. and the UK.

What actions were taken by Walgreens Boots Alliance to treat waste responsibly?

In its 2018 Corporate Social Responsibility Report Walgreens Boots Alliance reports that it took the following actions for treating waste responsibly:

Implementing a zero waste to landfill project across U.S. distribution centres

The Walgreens zero waste to landfill project was implemented across 15 Walgreens distribution facilities in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, after a pilot test in select locations. In fiscal 2018, the facilities involved in the project diverted 93 percent of waste from landfill, compared with 88 percent in fiscal 2017. Walgreens also carried out an audit of the current recycling processes at its corporate campus in Deerfield, Illinois, in partnership with the Astor Company, a recycling and consulting firm. The audit analysed current programmes, gathered information for a potential composting programme and generated baseline data for measuring effectiveness of future strategies. Among the resulting key learnings were increasing standardised recycling containers, implementing the composting programme and consolidating an improved cardboard recycling programme. Additionally, in fiscal 2018, during the renovation of 17 stores in Gainesville, Florida, Walgreens diverted 107.3 metric tonnes of construction material from landfill to recycling and also diverted more than 3.4 million pounds (1.5 million kilograms) of products from landfills across the U.S. by donating them to Feeding America, the largest domestic hunger-relief and food rescue organisation.

Reducing single-use plastics

In a commitment to reduce single-use plastics, in July 2018 Boots UK joined the UK Plastics Pact, led by WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme). The Pact initiative brings together businesses from across the entire plastics value chain with UK governments and non-governmental organisations to tackle the issue of plastic waste. Through its pledge to the Pact, Boots UK aims to help make a fundamental change in the way businesses design, produce, use, re-use, dispose and reprocess plastics. Boots UK is working collectively with members of the Pact, including other major retailers, to transform the UK plastic packaging sector through a multi-step approach, including making 100 percent of plastic packaging reusable, recyclable or compostable by the year 2025.

Running the Spring Cleanup Campaign

In April 2018, the Walgreens support office in Deerfield, Illinois held its annual Spring Cleanup Campaign. Over the course of the week-long campaign, more than 37,000 pounds (16,000 kilograms) of paper were collected for shredding and recycling. In addition, over 3,400 pounds (1,500 kilograms) of electronic waste were collected for environmentally responsible disposal. The Spring Cleanup Campaign at Walgreens Boots Alliance UK office locations resulted in the removal of redundant IT equipment, documents for archiving, used batteries and general waste. Employees also donated gently used clothing items to Cancer Research UK, replaced plastic bottled water with canned water and replaced plastic cutlery and dishware with compostable alternatives.

Promoting pharmacy recycling

In fiscal 2018 Walgreens retail pharmacies completed the implementation of a new process for returning disposable patient information to distribution centres for recycling. As of August 2018, Shredit, a document destruction firm, was removing documents from more than 8,000 pharmacies. Between December 2016 and August 2018, this recycling process translated to more than 317,000 saved trees and more than 129 million saved gallons of water.

Diverting feminine hygiene products and diaper waste from landfill

Boots UK works with an external waste service provider to divert feminine hygiene products and diaper waste from landfill, converting them to fuel pellets for incinerators. After a pilot programme in the Boots UK support office in fiscal 2017, the process was extended in 2018 to most Boots stores and, during the fiscal year, 97 metric tonnes were diverted for incineration, out of a total of 136 metric tonnes.
