Abstract

Alcoa seeks to generate value for its stakeholders, stimulating economic activity at the local and regional levels, by providing stable, fair-paying jobs, procuring goods and services from local suppliers when possible, paying income and other taxes, and investing in community infrastructure and initiatives. In order to create economic value for its stakeholders Alcoa took action to:

create economic value for employees

create economic value for suppliers

create economic value for governments

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2020 Sustainability Report Alcoa identified a range of material issues, such as occupational health and safety, ethics, transparency and good governance, regulatory compliance, human rights. Among these, creating economic value for its stakeholders stands out as a key material issue for Alcoa.

Stakeholder engagement in accordance with the GRI Standards

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) defines the Principle of Stakeholder Inclusiveness when identifying material issues (or a company’s most important impacts) as follows:

“The reporting organization shall identify its stakeholders, and explain how it has responded to their reasonable expectations and interests.”

Stakeholders must be consulted in the process of identifying a company’s most important impacts and their reasonable expectations and interests must be taken into account. This is an important cornerstone for CSR / sustainability reporting done responsibly.

Key stakeholder groups Alcoa engages with:

Stakeholder Group

Stockholders

Local communities

Media

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics Alcoa conducted a survey of external stakeholders, including those representing customers, communities in which it operates, government, non-governmental organisations and industry associations.

What actions were taken by Alcoa to create economic value for its stakeholders?

In its 2020 Sustainability Report Alcoa reports that it took the following actions for creating economic value for its stakeholders:

Creating economic value for employees

In 2020, Alcoa spent US$ 1.5 billion in labour costs. These include compensation and benefits for employee services rendered plus employee expenses for external training, transfer and relocation, expatriate costs, workers’ compensation, travel, recognition and rewards, medical expenses, meals, recruitment, transportation, education, work clothes and other employee-related expenses.

Creating economic value for suppliers

In 2020, Alcoa spent US$ 8.2 billion for procurement.

Creating economic value for governments

In addition to the economic activity it stimulates at the local and regional levels, Alcoa also contributes to the communities in which it operates through a variety of tax payments. Accordingly, in 2020, Alcoa paid US$ 169.4 million in income taxes.

Which GRI Standards and corresponding Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been addressed?

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics Elkem surveyed key internal and external stakeholders.

What actions were taken by Elkem to promote responsible sourcing?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report Elkem reports that it took the following actions for promoting responsible sourcing:

Conducting supplier due diligence

Elkem’s procurement function is responsible for carrying out pre-qualification and risk assessments of suppliers based on corporate requirements within environment, health and safety, social responsibility, anti-corruption and compliance with laws and regulations. A structured auditing programme is also in place, to make sure all suppliers receive regular audits. Where the risk is identified as high, additional due diligence (integrity due diligence) or on-site audits are required. In 2019, 73% (ex. China) of new suppliers of raw material were screened against environmental and social criteria. For high risk suppliers, additional due diligence was conducted (integrity due diligence). One supplier was excluded based on due diligence findings. In 2020/2021, Elkem is updating its supplier due diligence process, aiming for a harmonised approach to screening using social criteria. All new suppliers will be screened against the topics in the GRI 400 series.

Implementing a code of conduct for business partners

In October 2019, Elkem launched a code of conduct for its business partners (“the business partner code”). The business partner code sets out Elkem’s expectations of its suppliers with regards to ethics, labour rights and social and environmental issues. Elkem requires all new suppliers to endorse the business partner code and maintain their commitment throughout the relationship. The business partner code is considered an integral part of any agreement that regulates the relationship between Elkem and a supplier.

Developing detailed requirements for high risk suppliers

Elkem has developed detailed requirements for high risk suppliers and contractors regarding health, safety and environmental standards for operations like mining, transportation, storage and loading, and is actively involved in the promotion and monitoring of safe and decent working conditions. This includes health and safety training and providing correct personal protection equipment for suppliers’ employees when necessary. Age control to prevent child labour and ensure responsible working conditions for young employees is also carried out. Elkem requires suppliers and contractors to engage their employees with written contracts on fair terms, and to give them information about their right to organise and collectively bargain with management where this is legally possible. Elkem’s requirements are regularly discussed in meetings with suppliers. High-risk suppliers must document their understanding of legal requirements and hazards in their operations and present plans showing how risk will be eliminated or controlled while working for Elkem. Elkem performs audits and inspections, both in connection with routine visits for quality, technical and business follow-up, and as unannounced site visits. External auditors also conduct supplier audits on Elkem’s behalf. Violations of Elkem’s requirements are registered and addressed with verbal or written warnings in addition to requests for improvements when necessary. Repeated violations may lead to requirements for speedy implementation of improvement plans, financial penalties, or termination of contracts with immediate effect.

What actions were taken by Valcambi to promote and protect human rights?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report Valcambi reports that it took the following actions for promoting and protecting human rights:

Promoting compliance

Valcambi frames its commitment to human rights in line with the UN Guiding Principles on Business (ILO) and Human Rights, the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, and the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-affected and High Risk Areas. Valcambi also complies with the GRI Standards and upholds the framework set by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and with relevant sector standards such as the LBMA Gold Guidance and the Responsible Jewellery Council Code of Practice and Chain of Custody Standard. Valcambi’s Compliance Officer is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects related to human rights. He/she ensures that management and employees act in compliance with the rules and regulations of regulatory agencies and are aware of any potential risks of dealing with potential and current business partners.

Conducting due diligence

Human Rights due diligence is systematic for Valcambi when selecting a counterparty and Valcambi asks all of them to confirm their commitment to not tolerate any form of child labour. Valcambi actively cooperates with international organisations to support projects that aim to respect and support human rights. In particular, before sourcing from ASM, Valcambi conducts enhanced due diligence with a special focus on checking that there is no child labour and exposure of young workers to hazardous work and forced or compulsory labour. Valcambi looks not only at the situation on the mining site itself, but also in the mining communities surrounding the mine. Valcambi systematically conducts on-site visits to ensure the respect of human rights. In doing so, Valcambi not only complies but goes beyond the OECD Due Diligence Guidance, Fairtrade and Fairmined standards for gold and associated precious metals from artisanal mining.

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report Qatar Steel identified a range of material issues, such as operational efficiency, employee and contractor safety, emergency preparedness, energy consumption, product innovation. Among these, promoting responsible materials management stands out as a key material issue for Qatar Steel.

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics Qatar Steel engaged with its stakeholders through interviews, to obtain stakeholder feedback on material sustainability issues.

What actions were taken by Qatar Steel to promote responsible materials management?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report Qatar Steel reports that it took the following actions for promoting responsible materials management:

Implementing a Life Cycle Assessment

In 2019, Qatar Steel completed a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) on its products through a third-party evaluator, BRE Global, in accordance with the requirements of EN15804:2012 and A1:2013. By applying Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to its products, Qatar Steel is fully aware of its products’ environmental impacts throughout all stages of their life cycle, from mining to manufacturing, transport, use and recycling or disposal. This “cradle-to-grave” analysis is required to meet the international accreditations in manufacturing for Qatar Steel’s high-grade steel. Qatar Steel seeks to take full advantage of steel’s infinite recyclability by recycling steel scrap generated in Qatar, to further reduce the environmental impacts of its main products. The LCA also provides Qatar Steel with the necessary data to benchmark the environmental performance of the main products and acts as structural support for its environmental decision-making.

Promoting responsible sourcing

Qatar Steel has achieved a Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products certificate from UK CARES and holds a BRE BES 6001 Issue 3.1 responsible sourcing certification from UK CARES since 2016.The BRE standard BES 6001 has been published for construction product manufacturers to make sure and then prove that their products have been made with materials that have been responsibly sourced. The standard includes a framework for various aspects such as the organisational governance, supply chain management and environmental and social aspects that have to be addressed in order to ensure the responsible sourcing of construction products. In 2019, Qatar Steel also achieved a performance rating of “VERY GOOD”, becoming the first steel company to achieve a performance rating of “VERY GOOD” for the prestigious BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing Certification from CARES UK after the successful reassessment audit conducted, along with a CARES SCS Scheme Surveillance Audit.
