What actions were taken by Celestica to treat waste responsibly?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report Celestica reports that it took the following actions for treating waste responsibly:

Enabling waste solutions

Celestica helps its customers bring their innovations and product solutions to life by working behind the scenes at all stages of the product lifecycle – from design, prototype, manufacturing, and shipping to product recycling and refurbishing solutions. In its Industrial and Smart Energy businesses, Celestica is helping its customers bring smart trash receptacles to market. These highly complex, intelligent and connected systems collect trash bins only when full, which reduces energy costs and improves performance, sustainability, and waste reduction.

Promoting circularity

Celestica provides services that focus on designs with full lifecycle circularity, closed-loop systems, and after-market services. Offering products as a service is a tenet of the circular economy because it transforms the concept of ownership and encourages manufacturers to rethink how a product is used over its lifetime. Shifting mindsets from manufacturing products to delivering customer outcomes is growing the circular economy model. Celestica is working with customers to manage products through design, usage, maintenance, reuse, remanufacture, and recycling. This is being done through take-back programmes, keeping useful materials out of landfills or recycling streams, and screening and repairing products to be distributed back to customers. Within its Asset Recovery Services, Celestica has been able to create this circular model and properly recycle any residual materials.

Organising the Global Waste Reduction Week

2019 marked Celestica’s fifth Global Waste Reduction Week, an event that engages employees in reducing waste. Employees at 14 sites participated in the event and, in total, more than 1,900 kg of material was diverted from landfill during the week:

Partnering to Reduce Waste (Toronto): Employees hosted an on-site showcase of sustainable partnerships, which included an employee donation drive for smartphones. The phones were refurbished and upgraded with accessible technologies and distributed to the visually impaired through a local charity.

Waste Reduction (Valencia): Site employees promoted waste reduction with educational pamphlets featuring best practices for plastic use in their canteens. Additionally, more than 120 kg of unused tables were disassembled and reused for work benches on the manufacturing line.

Electronics Recycling (Toronto, Mississauga, Newmarket, Penang, Song Shan Lake): Approximately 115 kg of obsolete electronic waste including batteries were diverted from landfill by being recycled ethically.

Book and Clothing Drives (Toronto, Mississauga, Monterrey, Newmarket, Tucson, Penang, Suzhou, Thailand, Valencia, Oradea): Around the world, Celestica employees held book, toy, and clothing drives to reduce overall waste and give back to their communities. More than 300 kg of goods including winter clothing, books, food, toys and more were collected and distributed to orphanages, shelters for the homeless, abused women, and refugees.

Greening Meals (Leixlip, Suzhou GBS, Shanghai): Each of these sites introduced reusable cutlery, plates or mugs in their employee cafeterias. It is estimated that these initiatives will reduce 5,400 kg of waste annually.

Which GRI Standards and corresponding Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been addressed?

The GRI Standard addressed in this case is: Disclosure 306-2 Waste by type and disposal method

In its 2017 Sustainability Report Celestica reports that it took the following actions for promoting compliance and ethics:

Implementing an ethics programme

Celestica’s established ethics programme is open to all employees, customers, suppliers, and anyone else interacting with Celestica employees. If illegal or unethical behaviour is witnessed, employees have a responsibility to report it immediately. Additionally, Celestica supports an environment that is free from discrimination and harassment and employees are accountable for making sure Celestica’s culture is free from discrimination and harassment based on race, colour, religion, gender, gender identity, citizenship and/or origin, age, disability, sexual orientation, marital status or other factors.

Helping employees raise ethics concerns

Celestica seeks to make sure employees are aware of how they can voice their concerns on ethical matters and communicates various options in its Business Conduct Governance (BCG) Policy, and through the distribution of an ethics wallet card. In addition, there are Ethics Awareness Centres throughout Celestica’s sites that contain additional compliance and ethics information. Celestica encourages employees who have concerns or questions on legal or ethical matters to speak with their manager, a member of management or human resources. Employees can also email compliance@celestica.com should they have any questions or concerns on compliance or ethics issues and, if none of these options is preferred, they can report concerns to Celestica’s Ethics Hotline, by phone or through the web-based reporting tool. Maintained by a third-party vendor, Celestica’s Ethics Hotline is a key part of its ethics programme as a grievance mechanism available to all employees. The hotline programme allows employees to file an anonymous or identified report regarding misconduct in the workplace. Employees are assured that their reports are managed by an independent function, and investigated to the fullest extent. This programme, managed by the Compliance department, allows Celestica to maintain a high standard of ethics within the workplace. Celestica also makes sure that there is no reprisal or retaliation for reporting actual or suspected violations of the law, of the BCG Policy or other policies, or for cooperating in an investigation of reported violations. Celestica takes all reports of possible misconduct seriously and investigates the matter confidentially, making a determination whether the BCG or the law has been violated and taking appropriate corrective action.

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2016 Sustainability Report Celestica identified a range of material issues, such as anti-corruption, occupational health & safety, diversity & equal opportunity, forced or compulsory labour. Among these, promoting sustainability in the electronics supply chain stands out as a key material issue for Celestica.

Stakeholder engagement in accordance with the GRI Standards

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) defines the Principle of Stakeholder Inclusiveness when identifying material issues (or a company’s most important impacts) as follows:

“The organization should identify its stakeholders, and explain how it has responded to their reasonable expectations.”

Stakeholders must be consulted in the process s of identifying a company’s most important impacts and their reasonable expectations and interests must be taken into account. This is an important cornerstone for CSR / sustainability reporting done responsibly.

In its 2016 Sustainability Report Celestica reports that it took the following actions for promoting sustainability in the electronics supply chain:

Ensuring suppliers comply with the EICC Code of Conduct

Celestica informs its suppliers about the Electronics Industry Citizenship Coalition (EICC) Code of Conduct and uses approved EICC risk assessment methods and tools to monitor major suppliers’ management systems with regard to the EICC Code’s requirements. Conforming to the EICC’s mandate to better the electronics supply chain, Celestica makes sure it partners with socially responsible suppliers.

Requiring suppliers to complete Self-Assessment Questionnaires

Celestica requires suppliers on its Major Supplier List (MSL) to complete and submit Self-Assessment Questionnaires (SAQs), identifying risks within their operations. SAQs are completed by Celestica’s major suppliers annually and ask more than 100 questions regarding key elements of labour, ethics, the environment, and health and safety. The questionnaires also cover suppliers’ management systems that are used to identify, manage and monitor each of these elements.

Implementing a Supplier Responsibility Management System

Celestica manages all its suppliers through its Supplier Responsibility Management System. By means of this system Celestica assesses each supplier’s level of risk. In addition, in 2014 Celestica updated these activities, with the Vendor Verification Visit. Every supplier on Celestica’s Major Supplier List is expected to complete an EICC Self-Assessment Questionnaire, support a Verification Visit and/or provide a VAP (Validated Audit Process) report if one is available. Audit findings are tracked through a Corrective Action Plan (CAP) and can result in removal from Celestica’s Preferred Supplier List (PSL) if appropriate corrective actions are not taken.
