What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2019 Annual and Sustainability Report SMPC identified a range of material issues, such as economic performance, effluents and waste, socio-economic compliance, labour-management relations. Among these, promoting occupational health and safety stands out as a key material issue for SMPC.

Stakeholder engagement in accordance with the GRI Standards

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) defines the Principle of Stakeholder Inclusiveness when identifying material issues (or a company’s most important impacts) as follows:

“The reporting organization shall identify its stakeholders, and explain how it has responded to their reasonable expectations and interests.”

Stakeholders must be consulted in the process of identifying a company’s most important impacts and their reasonable expectations and interests must be taken into account. This is an important cornerstone for CSR / sustainability reporting done responsibly.

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics SMPC conducted workshops with its different stakeholder groups.

What actions were taken by SMPC to promote occupational health and safety?

In its 2019 Annual and Sustainability Report SMPC reports that it took the following actions for promoting occupational health and safety:

Conducting risk assessments

SMPC’s Occupational Health (OH) teams conduct a regular risk assessment of the health and associated risks of SMPC’s mining and power operations and activities to its employees, host communities and other key stakeholders. Hazards such as chemicals, fumes, dust, and noise pollution have been identified as hazardous to the health of SMPC’s As such, SMPC enforced mitigation measures and controls such as a dust suppression system, fume hood, work schedule adjustments, and the provision of personal protective equipment (PPE), among others. SMPC also conducts spirometry and audiometry tests for employees at risk of pulmonary problems and hearing loss, respectively.

Providing medical services

Essential medical services are available to SMPC’s employees at its on-site clinic and infirmary. SMPC’s licensed health practitioners include physicians, nurses, dentists, medical technologists, radiologic technologists, and midwives. They possess the necessary qualifications and accreditations, and they comply with the legal requirements and recognised standards and guidelines for medical professionals. Licensed health service providers and emergency transport vehicles are available 24/7. First aid training is also conducted per work group to provide immediate and appropriate responses in case of injuries and emergencies. SMPC has installed emergency facilities such as first aid kits, showers, and eyewashes in strategic locations across its sites of operation.

Promoting employee wellness

SMPC provides its regular employees with a Health Maintenance Organisation (HMO) coverage, free medical consultations, annual physical examinations, and life and accident insurance, among other health benefits. SMPC also conducts health and wellness activities to promote a healthy lifestyle among its employees.

Providing health and safety training

SMPC’s health and safety training is geared towards relevance to the work responsibilities of its employees and their degree of exposure to certain risks and hazards. Through proper training and follow-up mechanisms, SMPC can equip its employees and contractors with the right knowledge on how to assess and manage relevant workplace hazards. Failure to do so may lead to increased occurrence of incidents in the workplace which, in turn, can stifle employee morale and productivity. By properly managing and implementing health and safety trainings, SMPC seeks to develop and maintain healthy workers that can handle their jobs safely, for the benefit of the organisation and all stakeholders.

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics OCP engaged with its stakeholders through a questionnaire sent to 40 stakeholder representatives.

What actions were taken by OCP to promote employee health and safety?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report OCP reports that it took the following actions for promoting employee health and safety:

Implementing an occupational health and safety management system

A corporate team is dedicated to health and safety management for all OCP sites and defines the guidelines of the safety approach based on feedback from the field. Each site implements a programme to address its specific road and safety issues – driven by a safety manager who coordinates a network of safety correspondents assigned to different areas of the site. Health & Safety committees – composed of employees’ representatives – are regularly held to ensure the co-construction and the efficiency of the performance cascading and feedback culture. The DOOC (DUPONT OCP Operations Consulting) joint venture – dedicated to health, safety and environment challenges – transversally supports the OHS management system.

Providing training

To build a mature safety culture, training at OCP consists of both technical and soft skills training. Employees acquire knowledge and know-how in accordance with safety standards and job exposure; and behavioural skills to have teams feel ownership, responsibility for safety culture and believe zero injuries is an attainable goal. OCP suppliers and subcontractors also receive safety training and procedures when it comes to intervention on industrial sites. Training mainly goes through OCP’s Industrial Expertise Centres (IECs) that provide site-specific trainings as well as UM6P and OCP professors.

Identifying and assessing risks

Aligned with OHSAS 18001 standard, OCP has implemented procedures and standards within its operations and developed a Zero incident roadmap. Prevention measures for serious and potentially serious injuries and fatalities (PSIFs) have been strengthened by developing a methodology to analyse the root causes of serious or potentially serious injuries and make sure that corrective actions are taken accordingly. The aim is to avoid any recurrence of these events and to gradually develop a mature safety culture for all OCP staff and business partners (subcontractors, suppliers, joint ventures). Aligned with OCP’s continuous improvement approach, this methodology is strengthened year-on-year.

Measuring performance

OCP has independent bodies conducting regular safety audits to verify the compliance of each unit and site with the management system and safety standard requirements. Each audit follows a defined protocol and schedule and conclusions are sent to the management of both the unit/site and corporate to adapt action plan. In addition, units/sites carry out their own audits based on self-assessment and implement the issued recommendations. OCP’s safety approach is also continuously improved through a regular feedback survey and grievance mechanisms available to employees and people who work for it.

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report Alacer identified a range of material issues, such as local and national employment, doing business in an ethical manner, environmental compliance, employee training and development. Among these, promoting employee health and safety stands out as a key material issue for Alacer.

To identify and prioritise material topics Alacer surveyed a sample of internal and external stakeholders.

What actions were taken by Alacer to promote employee health and safety?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report Alacer reports that it took the following actions for promoting employee health and safety:

Conducting risk assessments

The Çöpler Mine has a safety management plan and system in place aligned with international best practice standard ISO45001 and Alacer regularly assesses specific safety risks across each part of the Mine. In 2019, Alacer continued the development of its existing risk management programme applying leading practice guidance to its risk management and control methodology to ensure best outcomes. Alacer improved its systems and support to provide better on-the-job tools, recording and reporting information.

Promoting employee engagement

Alacer encourages its staff to think proactively about safety risks and to take responsibility for both the safety of themselves and their colleagues. Alacer also encourages a right to refuse work on the grounds of safety. That means all its workers are empowered to challenge their supervisors if they believe the appropriate safety measures or equipment are not in place. Alacer holds daily prestart and toolbox meetings which include safety briefings to reinforce risk awareness and the importance of safe working procedures. Safety training is, also, a critical part of the induction training for all employees and contractors, and regular additional job-specific safety training is provided – including use of chemicals, spills, working at height and hot work.

Ensuring emergency preparedness

Ensuring it is adequately prepared for an emergency is a key part of Alacer’s commitment to providing a safe working environment. The Çöpler Mine has a well-trained and equipped on site emergency response team in place. This includes three dedicated personnel and 86 trained workers. A minimum of 20 trained emergency response workers are on site at any one time. This means first response cover and assistance is available anywhere on site at any time. Alacer carries out mock drills throughout the year to make sure all workers know what to do in the event of an emergency, aiming for a three-minute emergency response time. During 2019, the Çöpler Mine signed a protocol with the Sub-governor of İliç to assist the District in dealing with emergencies such as traffic incidents and fires.

Abstract

To enable healthy and safe working conditions across its business in New Zealand, Fuji Xerox New Zealand implements an H&S (health and safety) Management System covering all its employees, with a goal of minimising illness and injury. This is made possible by identifying, assessing, and controlling risks in all workplace operations. In order to promote employee health and safety Fuji Xerox New Zealand took action to:

implement an H&S Management System

provide training

promote incident reporting

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2020 Sustainability Report Fuji Xerox New Zealand identified a range of material issues, such as product quality and safety, technology and innovation, customer satisfaction, information security and privacy. Among these, promoting employee health and safety stands out as a key material issue for Fuji Xerox New Zealand.

To identify and prioritise material topics Fuji Xerox New Zealand carried out a Stakeholder Engagement Survey, to review material topics previously identified by stakeholders through an online survey, following an extensive workshop and a face-to-face, interview-based approach.

What actions were taken by Fuji Xerox New Zealand to promote employee health and safety?

In its 2020 Sustainability Report Fuji Xerox New Zealand reports that it took the following actions for promoting employee health and safety:

Implementing an H&S Management System

Fuji Xerox New Zealand’s H&S Management System considers legal guidance from in-house and external legal counsel, regulatory authorities, and the Employers and Manufacturers Association. Fuji Xerox New Zealand has also had the System externally certified to ISO 45001:2018 and AS/NZS 4801:2001 standards. The System is underpinned by an H&S Policy reviewed and approved by the SLT and extensively documented in an H&S Manual available to all employees to guide efforts. It is executed across the company with the help of regular H&S Committee meetings (these were held twice weekly during the COVID-19 period) and regular meetings with Branch H&S Coordinators. H&S outcomes are reviewed and reported monthly to the SLT to evaluate effectiveness, with a goal of continually improving practices and results. Through this regular review and reporting process, routine hazards are identified and regularly communicated across the business.

Providing training

Fuji Xerox New Zealand’s employees undergo H&S training at induction and on the job, to increase awareness of hazards and the controls and behaviours required to minimise their exposure to risks. Branch H&S Coordinators are provided with more advanced training. Operational control posters and safety information also feature widely across the company, posted in key operational areas and also in congregational areas such as staff pantries. These initiatives are driven by the H&S and Wellbeing Manager together with Branch H&S Coordinators.

Promoting incident reporting

Fuji Xerox New Zealand’s work-related activities are safe if proper precautions are followed by employees as detailed in the H&S Manual. However, accidents and other unforeseen incidents can still occur, and these are picked up via incident reporting to drive wider H&S Management System corrective improvements. In terms of incident reporting, a matrix of Risk Levels, Tolerances, and Management Actions is included in the H&S Manual. Employees who have H&S incidents or even near misses are required to submit reports to the H&S and Wellbeing Manager. Should circumstances arise (for any reason) that render workplaces unsafe or unhealthy, even temporarily, employees are advised to remove themselves from the unsafe areas and report the situations immediately to their managers, H&S Coordinators at their locations, or the H&S and Wellbeing Manager. Participation is welcomed for all H&S matters at branch levels, and employees can also raise concerns to and participate in the H&S Committee.

In its 2018 Corporate Social Responsibility Report China Life identified a range of material issues, such as corporate governance and ethical management, operational performance, anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing, information security and personal information protection, climate change response and environmental management. Among these, promoting workplace health and safety stands out as a key material issue for China Life.

Stakeholder engagement in accordance with the GRI Standards

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) defines the Principle of Stakeholder Inclusiveness when identifying material issues (or a company’s most important impacts) as follows:

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics China Life engaged with its stakeholders through 110 questionnaires that were distributed to both internal and external stakeholders.

What actions were taken by China Life to promote workplace health and safety?

In its 2018 Corporate Social Responsibility Report China Life reports that it took the following actions for promoting workplace health and safety:

Establishing the Occupational Safety and Health Committee

China Life established the Occupational Safety and Health Committee, which includes one director and six regular members. Among them are at least three labour representatives, accounting for 42.9% of total membership. In 2018, the committee convened quarterly to review safety and health policies and make recommendations and proposals. It also passed the annual Occupational Safety and Health Management Plan, which is used for managing related issues.

Carrying out inspections

In 2018, China Life regularly conducted workplace fire safety equipment inspections and repairs as well as building safety inspections and reporting. China Life also continued to implement automatic safety and health inspections of workplace facilities. Biannual environmental monitoring (for carbon dioxide concentration and workplace illumination) ensured that China Life’s workplace environment was favourable to operations. Moreover, China Life made arrangements to prepare for earthquakes, fires, and emergency medical situations. Besides establishing an autonomous fire safety group, China Life joined fire safety lectures and emergency evacuation drills run by building management to raise its emergency response capabilities. At its Dunbei Building headquarters, China Life established a joint defence team that can provide disaster prevention and rescue during normal times and more extensive support when actual disasters occur.

Promoting on-site healthcare

As part of China Life’s efforts to provide a safe and comfortable working environment, major service counters across Taiwan provide free blood pressure monitoring devices. To make sure that employees know how to use automated external defibrillators (AED), in 2018 a total of 2,263 employees underwent CPR and AED training at China Life’s headquarters and the customer service centres in Taoyuan-Hsinchu, Chiayi, Tainan, and Kaohsiung, and each of these locations received AED equipment and underwent AED safe location certification. Additionally, China Life has 139 staff members certified in first aid spread across its various offices and provisions of emergency medicines and equipment. Wheelchairs are available at the headquarters in case of need, and China Life will evaluate whether more wheelchairs are needed for other major workplaces. China Life also employs seven nurses who promote health by offering health advice, information on preventing workplace illnesses and injuries, first aid, and emergency responses. They similarly provide additional information on communicable disease prevention and health maintenance using China Life’s internal mail network. In addition, China Life offered 26 lectures and consultations in conjunction with contracted clinical service physicians from across Taiwan.

Improving indoor air quality

To minimise the impact of air pollution China Life follows requirements in the “Indoor Air Quality Management Act,” despite this act being stricter than the standards required of the insurance industry. In 2018, China Life also sent five employees to attend external training and become certified as indoor air quality management specialists. They will be responsible for assessments and actions needed to effectively manage China Life’s indoor air quality, so its employees can work in a healthy environment.

In its 2019 Sustainability Report D&G reports that it took the following actions for promoting employee health and safety:

Establishing the Safety Leading Group

In order to closely monitor the actual implementation and effectiveness of relevant policies and measures, D&G has internally established the Safety Leading Group (the “SLG”), which comprises the President, production manager and relevant department heads. The SLG helps to eliminate potential work hazards through measures such as risk identification, hidden trouble investigation and governance, and also ensures compliance with relevant laws and regulations. D&G has set safety production goals, such as: zero major accidents of fire, explosion and chemical leakage; zero occupational diseases; 100% validity of the certificate for special operations personnel; limiting production days affected by environmental protection or safety issues due to internal reasons to less than 15 days. Under the safety management framework, each department cooperates with one another, enabling D&G to comprehensively manage occupational health and safety, and thereby implement and oversee relevant measures effectively.

Providing personal protective equipment and developing a safety culture

D&G adheres to the people-centred operation approach and views protecting employees’ health and safety as its own responsibility. According to the employee’s job nature and the requirements of occupational health and safety management, D&G allocates relevant equipment and provides personal protective equipment and labour protection products for staff, such as fire extinguishing equipment, goggles and gloves, in order to eliminate occupational hazards. Additionally, D&G seeks to develop a safety culture in the production sites and arranges regular safety training for the employees, including fire drills and relevant courses, explaining the occupational hazards and safety practices in details.

Carrying out employee health checks

D&G has considered that it is possible for employees to get occupational diseases at work, including pneumoconiosis, eye, ear, nose and throat diseases, and chemical poisoning. In order to ensure the employees’ physical conditions are allowed to cope with the job position, and prevent the operational efficiency from disruption, D&G arranges body checks for employees before, during and after their discharge of job duties. The S&E (Safety and Environmental) Department is responsible for distributing the results to the person in charge or employees themselves, forming occupational health summary and keeping records. Without the approval of the management, the relevant information is not allowed to be borrowed or copied, in a bid to protect the employees’ privacy. During the reporting year, D&G has not noticed any record of health issues related to occupational hazards.

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report Hap Seng Plantations identified a range of material issues, such as water management, labour conditions & welfare, relationship & support to smallholders, transparency, community development. Among these, promoting workplace safety stands out as a key material issue for Hap Seng Plantations.

To identify and prioritise material topics Hap Seng Plantations directly engaged with both its internal and external stakeholders through group session engagements, by phone and one-to-one interviews.

What actions were taken by Hap Seng Plantations to promote workplace safety?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report Hap Seng Plantations reports that it took the following actions for promoting workplace safety:

Promoting the responsible handling of chemicals

As dedicated spraying crews manually apply fertilizers and pesticides in Hap Seng Plantations’ plantations, each crew member receives continuous training in chemical handling, while all sprayers are required to wear PPE (personal protective equipment) covering the full body and must shower after each shift. Assistant managers and field conductors are responsible for ensuring compliance with safety procedures, which is monitored through internal safety audits. Spraying crews are also required to attend a health check every three months. This routine is particularly important for women workers. Pregnant workers are reallocated to new job tasks with less risk, such as general work (e.g. line sweeper), and are given two months of maternity leave after delivery. Hap Seng Plantations has also banned the use of paraquat in all its plantations since 2011, responding to stakeholders’ concerns about the chemical and its widespread misuse.

Implementing a standardised health and safety programme

To remind its employees to adopt a safe work culture on a daily basis and avoid risk behaviours, Hap Seng Plantations has been implementing a standardised health and safety programme according to job type, across all operations, which includes the following:

Annual training on Safety Operating Procedure (SOP) for each work unit.

Daily monitoring of the work activity in each work unit by management representatives.

Induction training on SOPs for every new employee.

Safety committee meetings between management and worker representatives held on a quarterly basis to discuss actions required to improve the SOP of each work unit.

Periodical reviews on Hazard Identification Risk Assessment and Risk Control (HIRARC) in order to improve control measures and reduce the risk of accidents.

Applying specific safety procedures

To not only reduce accident rates but also make OSH (occupational safety and health) a culture and a way of life, Hap Seng Plantations implements specific safety procedures, including:

Implementation of a Log Out Tag Out system (LOTO) in mill machinery. LOTO increases machine handling safety, especially during maintenance, by locking the switchboard to prevent accidental activation.

Implementation of Permit To Work (PTW) for high-risk and/or non-routine work – for example working at height, in extreme temperatures and in confined spaces. PTWs are only issued to individuals qualified to do the work, thereby ensuring compliance with SOPs.

Quarterly workplace safety inspections/audits carried out by a safety committee member to review any set safety measures requiring improvement.

Training workers on HIRARC for each work task to help them better understand task-specific hazards.

Engaging external occupational safety and health trainers, such as the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and BOMBA, to conduct Authorised Entrant and Standby Person (AESP) competency training and fire training.

Additionally, all Hap Seng Plantations’ estates and mills will need to routinely undergo chemical health risk assessments (CHRA). The CHRA is carried out once every five years to understand chemical hazards to health and ensure compliance with the Use and Standard of Exposure Chemical Hazardous to Health (USECHH) Regulation 2000. All Hap Seng Plantations workers are also covered by the Foreign Workmen Compensation Scheme, a general insurance policy that covers both injuries and fatalities.

To address these concerns, the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) launched an updated version of the widely used GRI 403: Occupational Health and Safety reporting standard Tweet This!. The updated GRI OH&S standard calls for a more complete, worker-centric reporting from companies, which are now better equipped to report on both harm prevention and health promotion.

Judy Kuszewski, Chair of the Global Sustainability Standards Board, said: “We saw that there was a need for a rigorous methodology for measuring OH&S performance, based on leading rather than lagging indicators. The Global Sustainability Standards Board set out to create a world-class reporting standard that emphasizes measures that prevent injuries and ill health, aligned with key instruments and with the latest trends in OH&S management.”

GRI-403 covers a wide range of workers, beyond the traditional idea of employees on a payroll

The updated GRI standard puts the worker at the centre. It covers a wide range of workers, beyond the traditional idea of employees on a payroll, and offers a response to modern ways of working, such as the gig economy or the mobile workforce. The standard also focuses on worker’s recovery from work-related injuries, leaving behind measures that only focused on lost work time. The new GRI 403 standard includes disclosures on hazard identification, risk assessment, occupational health services, worker participation, and training, to protect workers from work-related injuries and ill health. In addition, to help workers lead healthier lifestyles, the standard also includes disclosures on non-occupational healthcare services and voluntary health promotion programs.

A combined effort by world-class OH&S experts

The updated GRI standard is aligned with key ILO instruments and with the newly released ISO 45001 on occupational health and safety management systems. The update was completed by a diverse group of stakeholders, who combined knowledge and experience in occupational health and safety. Thus, the Project Working Group included representatives from businesses, labor, civil society, investors and various international organisations.

According to Richard Jones, IOSH Head of Policy and Public Affairs, “standards like this, supporting transparency in operations and supply chains worldwide, can help ensure reports are meaningful and comparable and drive better health and safety performance – benefiting individuals, businesses and societies.”

78% of the world’s 250 largest companies report in accordance with the GRI Standards

SustainCase was primarily created to demonstrate, through case studies, the importance of dealing with a company’s most important impacts in a structured way, with use of the GRI Standards. To show how today’s best-run companies are achieving economic, social and environmental success – and how you can too.

Research by well-recognised institutions is clearly proving that responsible companies can look to the future with optimism.

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2016 Sustainability Report BEWG identified a range of material issues, such as environmental protection awareness raising, business compliance, product and service quality, offering environmentally friendly products and services. Among these, promoting workplace safety stands out as a key material issue for BEWG.

Stakeholder engagement in accordance with the GRI Standards

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) defines the Principle of Stakeholder Inclusiveness when identifying material issues (or a company’s most important impacts) as follows:

“The organization should identify its stakeholders, and explain how it has responded to their reasonable expectations.”

Stakeholders must be consulted in the process s of identifying a company’s most important impacts and their reasonable expectations and interests must be taken into account. This is an important cornerstone for CSR / sustainability reporting done responsibly.

Key stakeholder groups BEWG engages with:

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritize material issues BEWG carried out a stakeholder survey, using an online survey platform. As a result, BEWG received 377 pieces of stakeholder feedback, from 19 provinces.

What actions were taken by BEWG to promote workplace safety?

In its 2016 Sustainability Report BEWG reports that it took the following actions for promoting workplace safety:

Clarifying safety management responsibilities

BEWG urged senior management staff in charge of business units to sign a safety responsibility letter, which clearly identified safety accountabilities and established safety objectives. In addition, BEWG conducted surveys regarding the safety management team composition of each business unit, requiring them to create dedicated safety management positions with clearly defined job descriptions and accountabilities.

Identifying and eliminating safety hazards

BEWG believes that “Hazards are accidents”. As a consequence, BEWG conducts regular, specific, all-inclusive, periodic inspections, along with special inspections before special events or holidays, to detect and eliminate safety hazards.

Organizing safety training and awareness raising activities for employees

BEWG organizes the Safety Month event, focusing on raising the safety alertness and safety accident preparedness of its employees through, among others, training and education, safety hazard screening and elimination and emergency drills. Additionally, BEWG uses on-site electric displays, a safety knowledge competition and safety education videos to help employees develop safety knowledge and a stronger safety awareness. Moreover, to improve employees’ awareness of fire hazards and help them better protect themselves and put out fire in case of a fire accident, BEWG collaborated with the local fire brigade and financial institutions and implemented a series of fire safety education programmes. These programmes included fire hazards inspections and fire emergency drills, and employees were provided with fire safety tips, fire alarm information, fire distinguishing skills and safe escape tips.

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2016 Corporate Social Responsibility Report Ardentec identified a range of material issues, such as integrity management, business performance and profitability, customer service and satisfaction, risk management, respect for human rights. Among these, promoting workplace health and safety stands out as a key material issue for Ardentec.
