Resources in support of the Culture of Health for Business Framework

GRI has launched a range of new resources to help companies integrate the Culture of Health for Business (COH4B) Framework within their sustainability reporting. Tweet This!

COH4B is a holistic framework, endorsed by GRI, on the role of companies in impacting the health and wellbeing of their employees and stakeholders. It was developed in 2019 by a group of leading companies, non-profits and academia in the United States, with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

The framework identifies smart business practices that cut across environmental, social and governance issues, aimed at helping businesses build and promote a healthy working environment and manage impacts on population health through their operations and actions. It is now freely available to be used by companies around the world.

To enable organizations to use the COH4B Framework alongside their existing reporting through the GRI Standards, three resources are now available:

Linking the GRI Standards and the COH4B Framework: How to map the 16 COH4B business practices against the disclosures in the GRI Standards

Frequently Asked Questions – Using the GRI Standards with COH4B: A series of practical and informative FAQs to assist reporters

Key Facts Sheet: Summary of how to use the GRI Standards with COH4B

Tim Mohin, GRI Chief Executive, said:

“We are proud of our partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation on the Culture of Health for Business. This framework provides organizations with actionable guidance to improve the well-being of employees, communities and others impacted by the company.

A key lesson of the COVID-19 pandemic is that health and well-being is not simply a matter of good corporate citizenship; it’s critical to business. By linking the GRI Standards to COH4B, we are giving organizations tools for connecting their familiar sustainability programs to broader health outcomes.”

Donald F. Schwarz, Senior Vice President, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, said:

“In close partnership with GRI, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is committed to providing the resources to support businesses in reporting on health and well-being outcomes. We hope COH4B will empower corporate leaders to take advantage of the business imperative of promoting a culture of health.”

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) is committed to working with others to build a Culture of Health where everyone has the opportunity to live a healthier life. The private sector, especially large corporations, has a tremendous influence on culture and is key to achieving high social and health standards for employees and other stakeholders.

The Culture of Health For Business Task Force

In May 2019, a Task Force of 15 companies was launched to discuss what a Corporate Culture of Health means. The Task Force includes corporate practitioners from sustainability, human resources, occupational health and safety, health and wellness and other relevant areas, bringing together companies from various sectors.

GRI will publish a suite of knowledge tools in 2020, to help companies apply the GRI Standards to the Culture of Health for Business Framework.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

A growing number of companies recognise their ability to contribute to a Culture of Health. By recognising the importance of health and well-being across the value chain, businesses can also benefit from greater productivity and higher retention.

The GRI Standards are a powerful tool for the private sector to accrue, track and report environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues and include specific health-related disclosures that may fall within the RWJF’s defined areas of “health”. These are GRI 401: Employment 2016, GRI 403: Occupational Health and Safety 2018, and GRI 416: Customer Health and Safety 2016. Other GRI Standards also contain disclosures which help understand an organisation’s impact on health.

RWJF recognises that the GRI Standards provide a good starting point to build a Culture of Health in which companies play a key part.

An advisory group will counsel GRI on developing tools, programmes, services and outreach, encourage collaboration among RWJF grantees and help ensure proper implementation of the Culture of Health for Business framework in the corporate community.

RESOURCES

Culture of Health for Business Report

Developed in collaboration with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, this report provides a framework for companies to take a holistic approach to their impact on the health of employees, families, and communities. It includes 16 Smart Business Practices that influence key health determinants. The report was developed through direct interviews and surveys with over 100 participants from private sector companies, ESG rating and research firms, and socially responsible investors, academics and public health professionals, non-profits, pension funds, unions, and governance research and proxy advisors.
