What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2020 Sustainability Report SCB identified a range of material issues, such as corporate governance and risk management, customer experience, data governance and cyber security, financial inclusion. Among these, promoting environmental sustainability among its suppliers stands out as a key material issue for SCB.

Stakeholder engagement in accordance with the GRI Standards

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) defines the Principle of Stakeholder Inclusiveness when identifying material issues (or a company’s most important impacts) as follows:

“The reporting organization shall identify its stakeholders, and explain how it has responded to their reasonable expectations and interests.”

Stakeholders must be consulted in the process of identifying a company’s most important impacts and their reasonable expectations and interests must be taken into account. This is an important cornerstone for CSR / sustainability reporting done responsibly.

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics SCB engaged with its stakeholders through in-depth interviews.

What actions were taken by SCB to promote environmental sustainability among its suppliers?

In its 2020 Sustainability Report SCB reports that it took the following actions for promoting environmental sustainability among its suppliers:

Promoting eco-friendly event organisation

In 2020, SCB required event organisers and suppliers to organise events or activities on the bank’s premises to comply with environmental and safety measures consistent with the bank’s procedures. Those organising events and selling goods within SCB’s premise must utilise only eco-friendly and non-polluting products. Organisers must also sort waste into general, recycled, and organic waste before disposing of it at a designated location. Non-compliance incurs penalties as specified in procedures.

Improving suppliers’ environmental performance

SCB works closely with its suppliers to continuously improve their environmental performance by specifying procurement procedures which consider environmental impacts. Every vendor is required to acknowledge the SCB Supplier Code of Conduct before commencing work with the bank. This document specifies legal compliance on the basis of human rights and environmental management. To better understand vendors and to more effectively manage supply chain sustainability, SCB classifies suppliers into different groups based on their procurement value, product, and service type, and strategic importance to facilitate supplier management and regulatory compliance.

Promoting continuous process improvement and communication

In 2020 SCB improved its procurement process and assessed supplier efficiency in terms of environmental prudence by specifying environmental and safety requirements for new supplier selection. Assessment results are used as input into future hiring decisions. This practice is communicated during the annual Vendor Communication Day event, which had more than 185 participants in 2020. Starting in June 2020, 100% of new suppliers passed environmental and safety assessments.

Which GRI Standards and corresponding Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been addressed?

The GRI Standards addressed in this case are:

1) Disclosure 308-1 New suppliers that were screened using environmental criteria

2) Disclosure 308-2 Negative environmental impacts in the supply chain and actions taken

Disclosure 308-1 New suppliers that were screened using environmental criteria does not correspond to any SDG.

Disclosure 308-2 Negative environmental impacts in the supply chain and actions taken does not correspond to any SDG.

78% of the world’s 250 largest companies report in accordance with the GRI Standards

SustainCase was primarily created to demonstrate, through case studies, the importance of dealing with a company’s most important impacts in a structured way, with use of the GRI Standards. To show how today’s best-run companies are achieving economic, social and environmental success – and how you can too.

In its 2019 Sustainability Report SCB reports that it took the following actions for promoting financial literacy for retail customers and the general public:

Developing and improving the SCB website

SCB’s website has undergone constant development and improvement so as to become the information hub for SCB’s products and services as well as a conduit of financial knowledge for customers and website visitors. Here, SCB publishes articles on a wide variety of topics related to personal finance and business management which are easy to understand and relevant to day-to-day lives, such as tips for paying off mortgage quickly, credit card debt management, investment portfolio design, and marketing in the digital age, as well as creating motivation and success. These articles also weave in content on financial access and appropriate use of products and services to reinforce customers’ and the public’s understanding. Furthermore, SCB also promotes financial literacy by creating content in the form of articles, infographics, videos, or short-movies, and creating engagement in social media which have attracted a lot of interest and many followers.

Partnering with Mahidol University to build financial management capabilities

SCB has partnered with Mahidol University on the “Smart University” project under the “Digital Convergence University” concept to build financial management capabilities and help universities transition to the digital economy. This project seeks to build financial and investment foundation for university students and staff by enhancing skills, knowledge, and exposure to real experiences. Under this partnership, SCB and Mahidol University have worked together to create and develop the following initiatives:

“SCB Investment Lab”: The first virtual investment lab in Thailand that creates learning experiences with digital technology and virtual trading experiment.

“E-learning”: Mahidol platforms and apps featuring training from highly-regarded financial experts in various fields who not only educate but also motivate students.

“Mahidol Virtual Classroom Powered by SCB”: The first smart university classroom in Thailand featuring interactive teaching and learning among four university campuses, which are Salaya campus, Kanchanaburi campus, Nakhon Sawan campus, and Amnaj Chareon campus, to support borderless education between faculty members and students.

“We Mahidol App”: Mahidol’s official app that connects students and faculty members anywhere anytime to facilitate learning and lifestyle on campus with features such as class scheduling, attendance checking, event calendar, campus news and activities. Moreover, “We Mahidol App” also serves as a knowledge and communication hub and offers a payment function that works for both on-campus and off-campus stores to support the government agenda on a cashless society.

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2019 Sustainability Report SCB identified a range of material issues, such as corporate governance and risk management, customer experience, financial inclusion, responsible lending. Among these, promoting cyber security stands out as a key material issue for SCB.

Key stakeholder groups SCB engages with:

In its 2019 Sustainability Report SCB reports that it took the following actions for promoting cyber security:

Implementing an Information Security Policy

Based on the Confidentiality-Integrity-Availability (CIA) triad, the SCB Financial Group Information Security Policy is communicated to all employees, including those in probationary periods and on temporary contracts, suppliers and consultants, from whom strict compliance is expected. The Policy also assigns the Audit Unit to perform an audit and make recommendations for further improving cyber security. SCB has adopted a proactive approach to cyber security by focusing on developing technology and processes for cyber threat detection, such as the Cybersecurity Threat Intelligent Surveillance system and machine learning technology to study the pattern of cyber-attacks, both internally and externally. This proactive approach enables SCB to assess the situation and be ready to respond and prevent potential losses. Additionally, for data storage with comparable effectiveness to on-premise storage, SCB uses Cloud Computing Technology to keep potential risk under its risk appetite level, to increase operational speed, and to lower the cost of maintaining the internal computer network and systems. Moreover, cyber security performance is regularly reported to senior management in a dashboard format. To be ready for an emergency situation and make sure that systems can be recovered back to normal service and operation in an appropriate timeframe, SCB has also established a policy and guideline for preparing an IT Contingency Plan, which is aligned with its Business Continuity Plan. This contingency plan defines processes, practices and the roles and responsibilities of the relevant business units in executing, testing, reviewing and revising the IT Contingency Plan according to the business context.

Integrating cyber security into software development and operations

In 2019, SCB upgraded its software development approach from DevOps to DevSecOps (Development Security Operations), whereby cyber security is integrated as part of SCB’s development and operations life cycle. This means that cyber security control measures are embedded throughout SCB’s software development life cycle to enhance the ability to create innovation and make further product and service improvements to deliver even greater speed, effectiveness, and security. Through this approach, SCB added security automation tools in the software development process to make security testing faster and more effective. The automation tools allow SCB’s software developers and system administrators to perform security testing on their own and detect any vulnerability after the software launch, receiving timely reports on potential problems.

Building a data and cyber security culture

In parallel with continuously investing in technology and developing cyber security systems that meet global standards, SCB is committed to building a data and cyber security culture for employees at every level. SCB uses work processes, training and internal communication to promote awareness on appropriate and secure data handling, data protection, cyber risk, and cyber threat prevention. Accordingly, SCB provides a data classification training course on its e-learning system to promote appropriate and secure data usage throughout the organisation and offers a cyber security course to senior executives which covers topics such as causes of cyber-attacks and impacts of cyber threats. Employees at all levels are also required to take the mandatory course on cyber security on the system which focuses on basic knowledge regarding data protection, on understanding the forms and impacts of cyber threats through simulation, and on how to prevent and report an incident. Throughout 2019, SCB organised “Don’t Let It Happen” activities to promote awareness on cyber threats, cyber risks, and data security protection with an emphasis on safeguarding the data of both customers and SCB and building awareness on risk behaviours that may cause damage to the business or SCB ‘s One of the highlights that attracted many participants was the “Cybersecurity Awareness Day 2019,” which featured talks by external experts regarding cyber security on topics such as knowing tricks of cyber criminals inside out, understanding data risk, and using personal information on social media.

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2018 Sustainability Report SCB identified a range of material issues, such as cyber security, talent attraction and retention, customer expansion, financial inclusion and financial literacy, operational eco-efficiency. Among these, combatting money laundering stands out as a key material issue for SCB.

In its 2018 Sustainability Report SCB reports that it took the following actions for combatting money laundering:

Implementing a Transaction Reporting System

In 2018, SCB introduced the Automated Anti-Money Laundering Transaction Monitoring System (AMLTMS) for monitoring and reviewing customers’ transactions in accordance with the relevant laws based on explicitly specified conditions and guidelines, such as account surveillance for self-employed customers, customers with low or no income, suspicious ATM/ CDM transactions, suspicious internet banking transactions that do not align with the reported occupation or income etc. If transactions are found to be suspicious or inconsistent with the customer’s income and occupation, AMLTMS will perform analysis and customer due diligence in accordance with the Anti-Money Laundering Act and the Counter-Terrorism and Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction Financing Act. The Systems will then accurately, efficiently, and promptly report suspicious transactions to the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AML), as required by law. Additionally, SCB uses the SAS Transaction Monitoring system, to facilitate transaction reporting to the Anti-Money Laundering Office in a complete, accurate, and timely fashion.

Introducing a Know-Your-Customer solution

SCB has developed an electronic Know-Your-Customer system (e-KYC) for new customers, an innovation that allows customers to open a bank account without a need to visit a bank branch network. With this innovation, customers can open a bank account using their passports aided by near-field communication (NFC) technology embedded in their mobile phones to verify passport photos with facial recognition. This technology helps SCB minimise errors in the KYC process. In addition, SCB has collaborated with the Bank of Thailand, the Thai Bankers Association and other related agencies on the National Digital ID initiative to raise the KYC/CDD (Customer Due Diligence) standard for banking or government services and help streamline back-office processes for customers of financial institutions. This initiative allows financial institutions access to reliable data sources, to facilitate KYC compliance.

Providing AML/CFT training

SCB has organised training on Anti-Money Laundering, Counter-Terrorism and Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction Financing (AML/CFT) for management and employees throughout the organisation, with 25,737 employees completing the training. Relevant laws and practices are also communicated through the Bank’s circular letters and notifications, to make sure SCB employees are well-informed on, for instance, AML/CFT laws, regulations, and announcements, roles of financial institutions, and customer due diligence procedure, and can then apply the knowledge to perform their duties with confidence. SCB also provides this information in the form of classroom and e-learning, with content that is concise and easy to understand.
