In its 2016 Social Responsibility Report IIAC reports that it took the following actions for improving employees’ quality of life:

Reducing customary overtimes

IIAC seeks to reduce customary overtimes so as to improve employees’ quality of life and create a happier workplace. Accordingly, IIAC implemented the refresh and recharge (5 consecutive days of leave) vacations, to encourage its employees to take days off, and designated every Wednesday as no-overtime day. Additionally, IIAC introduced the Smart Work System, increasing work efficiency by dispensing of unnecessary work procedures. IIAC is monitoring these programmes, to make sure that they are effectively improving employees’ quality of life.

Offering flexible working hours

To support a balance between work and family IIAC implements various forms of flexible working hours, to cater to the needs of child-rearing employees, long-distance commuters, students, and employees with health concerns. Application procedures for flexible working hours were, however, complicated, and IIAC established the one-stop flexible working hour registration system, to facilitate application and approval. IIAC also updated its flexible working hour system, to improve its effectiveness. Before the update, flexible working hours had employees work 3 – 6 hours a day, 5 days a week. After the update, employees can choose to work on any 3 days of the week, for a total of 25 hours.

Creating a family-friendly working environment

IIAC has created and supports a family-friendly culture that enables its employees to balance work and family. Accordingly, IIAC has implemented 119 dinner campaign and family days to create a culture conducive to family life, and has also implemented the “change over plan” (enabling transition from maternity leave to child-rearing leave), installed nursery homes at the workplace, and reduced working hours for pregnant employees. In addition, IIAC encourages its male employees to also take parental leave, to lessen the burden of child care.

Promoting occupational health and safety

IIAC implements various support programmes to improve employees’ occupational health and safety. For example, IIAC established the Occupational Health and Safety Committee, jointly run by labour and management, which makes key decisions regarding employee health and safety in order to prevent industrial accidents and provide a safe work environment. Additionally, IIAC provides safety education to employees for at least one hour every month on the Safety Check Day (more than 3 hours each quarter). IIAC also provides professional services that include an annual medical check-up and a biannual complete check-up, follow-up examination for select conditions, and consultation with doctors. In addition, IIAC has introduced the EAP (Employee Assistance Programme) to measure and manage employees’ stress levels (8 times a year), to care for employees’ mental health as well.

Abstract

To promote the constant and consistent communication between labour and management IIAC has established various communication channels, and always consults the labour union prior to making changes to business or organisation that will affect working conditions. In order to advance labour-management relations IIAC took action to:

establish a labour union

update labour relations strategies

set up communication channels

prevent labour-management conflicts

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2016 Social Responsibility Report IIAC identified a range of material issues, such as anti-corruption, compliance with social regulations, customer safety and health, noise management, employee training and education. Among these, advancing labour-management relations stands out as a key material issue for IIAC.

Stakeholder engagement in accordance with the GRI Standards

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) defines the Principle of Stakeholder Inclusiveness when identifying material issues (or a company’s most important impacts) as follows:

“The reporting organization shall identify its stakeholders, and explain how it has responded to their reasonable expectations and interests.”

Stakeholders must be consulted in the process of identifying a company’s most important impacts and their reasonable expectations and interests must be taken into account. This is an important cornerstone for CSR / sustainability reporting done responsibly.

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics IIAC conducted an on-line stakeholder survey among business partners/ construction companies, employees, in-house retailers/ logistics companies, customers, the local community and airline/ ground staff, asking stakeholders to rank issues according to importance.

In its 2016 Social Responsibility Report IIAC reports that it took the following actions for advancing labour-management relations:

Establishing a labour union

IIAC Labour Union was established in 1995, and it is a member of the Federation of Korean Public Industry Trade Unions in the Federation of Korean Trade Unions. All employees with job Level 3 or lower are eligible for membership and, of the total 959 persons eligible to be a member, 957 (99%) have joined the labour union. IIAC complies with domestic and foreign labour laws, and always consults the labour union before making changes to business or organisation that will cause a material change to working conditions and employment.

Updating labour relations strategies

IIAC updated its strategies for advancing labour-management relations, to carry out government policy initiatives and increase employee morale, while fulfilling its social responsibilities. IIAC’s labour-management strategy aims to “create a labor-management relationship that is beneficial to the employees, corporate, and the People.” To achieve this goal, IIAC identified four strategic tasks: 1) upgrading and implementing a labour-management relations strategy, 2) creating output through sound labour-management relations, 3) promoting constant labour-management communication and improved relationship management, and 4) actively implementing government policy initiatives.

Setting up communication channels

To promote a consistent communication between the labour and management, IIAC has established several communication channels, including official meetings such as the Labour-Management meeting and Labour-Management Representatives meeting. Additional channels include top-down, bottom-up, two-way, and on/ off-line communication. IIAC also launched the “Online Proposal Bulletin”, to enable open communication regarding irrational customs, inefficient systems, work, and culture. Likes and dislikes functions and response functions available on the bulletin, make it a creative and constructive forum for discussion. In addition, IIAC further solidifies sound labour-management relations by holding on-demand working level meetings and joint workshops.

Preventing labour-management conflicts

IIAC seeks to prevent labour-management conflicts by forming a common understanding between labour and management. Accordingly, IIAC has established and implements an optimised salary peak programme in advance, in response to the government’s introduction of the Salary Peak Programme for Public Corporations. To boost employee morale after the implementation of normalisation measures for reckless management, IIAC also implemented various innovative campaigns and systems. These include the 337 Campaign, compressed workweek, recharge vacations, and celebrating Department Days to improve employees’ work ethic and mutual understanding. As a result, no labour disputes took place during the reporting period.

Which GRI Standards and corresponding Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been addressed?

The GRI Standard addressed in this case is: Disclosure 402-1 Minimum notice periods regarding operational changes

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2016 Social Responsibility Report IIAC identified a range of material issues, such as corporate transparency and ethical management, product and service safety, win-win growth, employee welfare and rights, prevention of environmental pollution. Among these, building trust with local communities stands out as a key material issue for IIAC.

Key stakeholder groups IIAC engages with:

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritise material topics IIAC carried out a stakeholder survey among business partners/ construction companies, employees, in-house retailers/ logistics companies, customers, the local community and airline/ ground staff. IIAC asked stakeholders to rank issues according to importance, on a 5-point scale.

In its 2016 Social Responsibility Report IIAC reports that it took the following actions for building trust with local communities: foster

Promoting education

To foster future talents, IIAC operates a local talent nurturing programme in different phases, from child care to university education. Accordingly, through the ‘specialised project for local schools’, an educational contribution programme, IIAC has been providing, annually, a total of KRW 600 million to 17 schools. In addition, IIAC supported, with KRW 2.5 billion for its operating expenses, the ‘Haneul High School’, the autonomous private high school established to develop the airport’s surrounding region and improve the living conditions of the airport’s employees – also planning to donate a total of KRW 10.8 billion over 5 years, from 2016 to 2020. IIAC has additionally awarded the Incheon Airport Scholarship to a total of 67 students in local elementary/ middle/ high schools and aviation universities, which amounted to KRW 130 million.

Supporting environmental sustainability

IIAC created, in collaboration with the ‘Forest for Life’, the ‘World Peace Forest’ of approximately 472,910m² in the surrounding areas of the Airport New Town and has been constantly supporting local residents’ activities of building the forest, promoting an urban environment that puts people and nature in harmony. In 2015, IIAC also donated KRW 70 million for 443 trees of the civic commemoration plantings, the development of a symbolic space, the spring/ autumn forest festival and training programmes, among others. Due to these activities, IIAC has been recognised by the Korea Forest Service for ‘contributing to the vitalisation of local communities by creating resident-centred green areas’ and was awarded the 2015 Urban Green Movement Excellent Corporation award.

Promoting culture and social welfare

IIAC created the Haneul Culture Centre in the vicinity of the Airport New Town for the residents of the Yeongjong and Yongyu areas, who had difficulty in receiving cultural benefits and in 2015, offered approximately KRW 40 million for the culture centre’s heating costs. IIAC also sponsored, with KRW 2 billion, Incheon United FC, a citizen-shareholding professional football team, contributing to the revitalisation of sports in the Incheon region. Moreover, IIAC delivered gifts to 5 social welfare facilities in the region during the holiday season, and promoted local social welfare by donating specially-equipped vehicles for the elderly and disabled.

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2016 Social Responsibility Report IIAC identified a range of material issues, such as corporate transparency and ethical management, win-win growth, employee welfare and rights, prevention of environmental pollution. Among these, promoting airport safety stands out as a key material issue for IIAC.

Stakeholder engagement in accordance with the GRI Standards

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) defines the Principle of Stakeholder Inclusiveness when identifying material issues (or a company’s most important impacts) as follows:

“The organization should identify its stakeholders, and explain how it has responded to their reasonable expectations.”

Stakeholders must be consulted in the process s of identifying a company’s most important impacts and their reasonable expectations and interests must be taken into account. This is an important cornerstone for CSR / sustainability reporting done responsibly.

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

To identify and prioritize material issues IIAC conducted an online stakeholder survey, collecting responses from business partners/construction companies, employees, in-house retailers/ logistics companies, customers, the local community and airline/ ground staff. Stakeholders were asked to rank issues according to importance, on a 5-point scale.

In its 2016 Social Responsibility Report IIAC reports that it took the following actions for promoting airport safety:

Upgrading the disaster prevention system

IIAC upgraded its disaster prevention system, concentrating on initial response capabilities and, also, updated its emergency plans. In addition, IIAC prepared an individual response protocol for different disasters, entered into a large-scale medical support agreement with Inha University Hospital and revised outsourcing contracts with business partners to ensure timely emergency response during holidays and night hours.

Establishing an airport epidemic prevention system

Following the outbreak of the MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) epidemic, IIAC made sure, through a comprehensive response system, that no passengers or airport employees were infected. Measures taken included:

Incheon International Airport’s MERS response team, consisting of five sub-teams, was in operation 24 hours a day, serving as the control tower for MERS response in the airport

temperatures were taken for all passengers from the Middle East, who were also required to fill out questionnaires about their health condition

various facilities, including the immigration checkpoint, restrooms and children’s playground were sterilized

all employees were provided with personal hygiene tools, including masks and hand sanitizers

Carrying out hybrid disaster response training

IIAC has gone beyond the traditional single-type disaster response to large-scale hybrid disaster response, regarding hybrid disasters such as intercity plane crash, mudflat plane crash and closure of access roads. Accordingly, IIAC developed an on-site response procedure for an intercity plane crash, encouraging local residents to participate in actual training. Additionally, IIAC carried out emergency response training under the assumption that both Yeongjong Bridge and Incheon Bridge were inaccessible and conducted personnel recovery and relief training for a plane crash in mudflat.
