The SustainCase Clean Air campaign’s aim is to make every breath we take free from harmful emissions and help fight climate change.

Simon Pitsillides, SustainCase Editor, discusses with Tim Mohin, CEO of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the ways in which the vast majority of companies which are the backbone of the world economy, can be mobilized to take real action. How they can be encouraged to #takePositiveAction and #bePositiveChange to effectively address this and many other important sustainability issues our world is facing today. By specifically identifying their most important impacts (materiality) and then proceeding to measuring, managing and changing, companies can become, with their positive contribution, part of a positive chain reaction that is changing our world.

Simon Pitsillides: The SustainCase Clean Air campaign in the UK is aimed at the companies who are responsible for approximately 90% of global economic activity (small and medium-sized enterprises). Our main target is that they use GRI 305: Emissions to drive pollution out of business supply chains, either through compulsory reporting (we have started a petition to the UK Government and Parliament) or through self-regulation. In essence, our goal is that the majority of companies take ownership and not only reduce their emissions, but also put pressure on their supply chains in a positive way, by choosing suppliers who produce little or no emissions. What are your thoughts regarding this target and the Clean Air campaign?

Tim Mohin: I am always happy when I see these types of grass roots efforts to encourage businesses to be more accountable for the impacts they are having on the economy, the environment and society. Clean air is such an important issue. It affects everyone. We know from experience that when we create transparency around impacts, businesses start making improvements. And you are right to note how important it is that companies work with their suppliers, since impacts are not limited to the four walls of the business.

GRI Standard 305 Emissions is an excellent tool for businesses of all sizes to measure, manage and communicate their Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions of greenhouse gases, ozone-depleting substances, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides and other significant air emissions. The GRI Sustainability Reporting Standards give organizations the flexibility to report just on their emissions (or any of the other topics) without producing an entire sustainability report.

Pitsillides: On a global scale, a key target of the SustainCase Clean Air campaign is to begin a conversation to make the measuring & public reporting of emissions by small and medium-sized enterprises compulsory, worldwide. This conversation, could help “accelerate change” (I am borrowing a phrase from the interview you kindly gave us in 2017). What are your thoughts on this?

Mohin: In principle I would like to see all businesses taking responsibility for their sustainability impacts, but I also know that many SMEs don’t have the resources to do sustainability reporting in the same way that Fortune 500 companies report. Again, this is why, under the GRI Standards, we created the option for a company to report on specific information without creating an entire report. At GRI, we know that getting more SMEs to begin disclosing information on their sustainability performance is the next big step we need to take in the transparency movement. We are also currently conducting research to assess what kind of policy and regulatory environment would be best, in terms of stimulating more reporting by SMEs.

Pitsillides: Does GRI provide additional support for companies who want to report their emissions using GRI 305: Emissions?

Mohin: Yes we do. With generous support from the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs SECO, we are currently working in select developing countries (Colombia, Ghana, Indonesia, Peru, South Africa and Vietnam) to stimulate more reporting by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Through the “Competitive Business Program,” we are helping SMEs begin reaping the many benefits of sustainability reporting, which will allow them to improve their business prospects and make positive contributions to their local society and economy. This effort includes GRI 305 disclosures as well as other key sustainability information.

Because many SMEs do not have the resources to put a sustainability management team in place, we have developed the GRI Digital Reporting Platform, a tool that makes reporting easier for SMEs. Using the Digital Reporting Platform, suppliers can digitally share the specific sustainability information that their customers want. The digital report that’s produced is in a format that allows companies in an SME’s value chain can aggregate and use for their own reporting. After we have completed the pilot phase in these six countries, we plan to make the GRI Digital Reporting platform available worldwide.

Pitsillides: Which is, in your view, the business case for reporting emissions? How will a small and medium-sized enterprise benefit from reporting this information and not see it as just a compliance requirement?

Mohin: I strongly believe that most business owners want to make positive contributions to their local communities and environment. Still, most SMEs do not report on their sustainability impacts because they either lack knowledge of the benefits they can gain from the practice or they believe that the process of reporting is too costly. So a large part of the work we do here at GRI is demonstrating to SMEs that they can benefit from sustainability reporting. When we look at companies reducing emissions, the business case is actually quite clear. Most of the emissions within a business’ control are associated with costs such as heating or cooling office buildings or fuel for vehicles or electricity used for running equipment. As such, a reduction in emissions is usually coupled with a reduction in those costs. That’s a tangible benefit to a company’s bottom-line.

Pitsillides: Do you believe that emissions should be considered a de facto material issue for all companies, given the urgency of the problem with air pollution as stated by the UN? Should, for example, financial institutions re-examine the boundary of this important material issue? In simple terms, should financial institutions not just report the emissions they are responsible for, but also carry out environmental assessments of clients and clients projects? In addition, should they find ways to support companies that are taking responsible action with clean energy and possibly reduce support for companies that are not doing so?

Mohin: I believe that looking at longer term risk, like climate change, is part of the fiduciary duty of financial institutions. That is why the information disclosed in GRI-reports is important for investors. Savvy investors, including financial institutions, should understand how the companies in which they are invested are performing in terms of environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues. I would like to see all investors using ESG data to inform decision making, so that we can move financial capital towards companies and projects that are making positive contributions to the world. This is particularly important if we want to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Trillions of dollars in investment capital are necessary in order to make the achievement of the SDGs a reality, but currently there is a disconnect, between the sustainability data that companies publish and the information that investors need for decision making. To help close this gap, GRI is working together with the UN Global Compact and the Principles for Responsible Investment on “Investor-relevant Business reporting on the Sustainable Development Goals.” This document will provide a brief overview of why investors are increasingly demanding SDG-related performance data, help corporate practitioners better understand who the relevant actors are within the investor community and include recommendations on how to present SDG-related information so that it resonates with an investor audience.

Pitsillides: Are there other issues that could be considered as material for a majority of companies, so as to meet global sustainability goals much sooner and accelerate change?

Mohin: Materiality assessments are very much determined by the context within which a specific business operates. This context is definitely informed by the particular industry or sector of the economy within which a company operates, but each business is unique. That said, the SDGs are the global framework for understanding how the world needs to change in order to create the conditions for sustainable development. All companies and their stakeholders should use the SDGs as a framework to guide their activities.

Pitsillides: Are small and medium-sized enterprises taking advantage of the flexibility the GRI Standards offer to disclose the most relevant information (materiality)? Are they taking action on what matters, where it matters for their business? Have they begun to report?

Mohin: We know that SMEs account for a significant portion of global economic activity and also create a large amount of sustainability impacts. But when we look into the GRI Sustainability Disclosure Database, a repository of over 46,000 sustainability reports, we see that a mere ten percent of them are from SMEs. With the GRI Standards, we are providing SMEs (and other businesses) the option to report on specific sustainability information by using as little as one GRI Standard, or a part thereof, without producing an entire sustainability report. So we hope to see the number of SMEs that disclose information on their sustainability impacts increase in the years to come.

Pitsillides: Thank you very much Mr Mohin.

Sustainability/ESG reporting in accordance with the GRI Standards is a crucial element for companies to succeed in the long term. Crucial not only in the effort to protect our fragile environment and battle climate change but also for companies in identifying and taking action on their most important impacts on stakeholders that can hold them back from reaching their objectives. Sustainability reporting is an important tool that helps companies maintain and increase their value.

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) promotes the use of sustainability reporting in order for companies and organizations to become more sustainable and be a vital part of a sustainable global economy. GRI has a mission: to make sustainability reporting standard practice. Thus, GRI produces free Sustainability Reporting Standards for all companies and organizations to report their economic, environmental, social and governance performance and positive or negative impacts.

Sustainability reporting will help your company identify key issues to focus on and, accordingly, improve productivity and reduce costs. Additionally, through gaining access to new markets and clients your company’s competitiveness will improve. And these are just some of the benefits.

Let us take a closer look at the main benefits of sustainability reporting, based on the experiences and testimonies of companies that GRI has engaged with in a number of projects:

Attracting, motivating and keeping employees. Sustainability reporting shows beyond doubt that your company takes sustainability issues seriously and is prepared to publicly discuss, measure and, most importantly, act on them. This will enhance your company’s reputation empowering, motivating and attracting employees committed to your company’s strategic objectives.
…more

Spotting strengths and weaknesses. The reporting process will help you identify and evaluate problem areas before they become unwelcome surprises and, also, discover unexpected opportunities ahead of your competitors. During the reporting process you may also realize that certain matters were not dealt with as well as you thought or had not been considered at all.
…more

Developing your sustainability vision and strategy. The reporting process will encourage and motivate your company to determine its vision and strategy for operating more sustainably and for providing more sustainable products and services.
…more

Improving management systems and setting goals. Sustainability reporting allows your company to track and appraise its performance, highlighting and making changes in areas that need improvement, such as productivity or business costs. Once your company starts reporting there will be increased expectations regarding its performance goals.
…more

Attracting funding. Lending institutions and investors increasingly take account of a company’s vision and performance in key sustainability issues when making funding decisions. A GRI reporting process will help your company manage sustainability issues more efficiently and be prepared to discuss openly its performance.
…more

Transparency and stakeholder engagement. Sustainability reporting will enhance your transparency and will be instrumental in building a solid relationship, based on mutual trust, with the company’s stakeholders whether these be clients, suppliers or shareholders, employees, local communities, NGOs or local government.
…more

Gaining competitive advantage. As sustainability reporting is still not common practice across all business sectors, your company can become a “leader in sustainability”.
…more

Improving your reputation, building trust and respect. Your company’s reputation, the trust and respect you have gained are of the utmost importance for your stakeholders. Accurate, honest, complete corporate reporting (reporting both on what goes well and on where there is room for improvement) builds trust and respect for your company.

Robert G. Eccles, Ioannis Ioannou and George Serafeim carried out a study exploring the impact of corporate sustainability on a company’s organizational procedures and performance, using a sample of 180 US companies divided in two groups: 90 companies identified as ‘High Sustainability’ companies, implementing environmental and social policies and initiatives over a number of years, and 90 companies identified as ‘Low Sustainability’, implementing no such policies or initiatives.

‘High Sustainability’ companies outperform ‘Low Sustainability’ ones

According to the study, ‘High Sustainability’ firms ‘are able to attract better human capital, establish more reliable supply chains, avoid conflicts and costly controversies with nearby communities (i.e., maintain their license to operate), and engage in more product and process innovations in order to be competitive under the constraints that the integration of social and environmental issues places on the organization’.

Stock market performance: The study is quite clear on how ‘High Sustainability’ firms outperform ‘Low Sustainability’ ones: ‘Investing $1 in the beginning of 1993 in a value-weighted (equal-weighted) portfolio of High Sustainability firms would have grown to $22.6 ($14.3) by the end of 2010. In contrast, investing $1 in the beginning of 1993 in a value-weighted (equal-weighted) portfolio of control firms would have only grown to $15.4 ($11.7) by the end of 2010.’

‘High Sustainability firms generate significantly higher stock returns, suggesting that indeed the integration of such issues into a company’s business model and strategy may be a source of competitive advantage for a company in the long-run. A more engaged workforce, a more secure license to operate, a more loyal and satisfied customer base, better relationships with stakeholders, greater transparency, a more collaborative community, and a better ability to innovate may all be contributing factors to this potentially persistent superior performance in the long-term.’

Green policies matter to employees

According to Neil Crawford, leader of the Best Employers in Canada study, ’employees really see the difference when their employer is focused on developing and implementing environmentally-conscious policies and practices’. In fact, as Crawford explains, ‘effective green programs and practices may persuade certain employees to join or stay with an organization’.

The ‘Green 30’ are doing more

‘The Green 30 are twice as likely as the 30 lowest ranked organizations to subsidize carbon offsets for business travel, sponsor programs to reduce green house gas emissions from business operations, host events to facilitate participation in Earth Day or Earth Hour, and subsidize the costs of bike storage and/or showers for employees who cycle to work. While there are significant variations in the use of some of these practices amongst the Green 30, they all demonstrate real passion and commitment to reducing the impact of their business on the environment in the eyes of their employees’ Crawford said.

The University of Melbourne is among the top universities worldwide and a member of the Group of Eight top universities in Australia. The vision of the University is to be one of the best universities worldwide contributing to society in ways that improve and change lives. Therefore, engaging students with sustainability issues is a key priority for the University.

This case study is based on the 2016 Sustainability Report by the University of Melbourne published on the Global Reporting Initiative Sustainability Disclosure Database that can be found at this link. Through all case studies we aim to demonstrate that CSR/ sustainability reporting done responsibly is achieved by identifying an organization’s or company’s most important impacts on the environment and stakeholders and by measuring, managing and changing.

With more than 48,000 students and over 8,000 employees, the University of Melbourne strives to engage the university community in social and environmental issues. The University is dedicated to influencing public thought and practices to achieve a sustainable future. In order to encourage and enable students to engage with sustainability issues the University of Melbourne took action to:

Enable student engagement on campus

Arm graduate students with the knowledge and skills so they can contribute to sustainability through their future professions

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2016 Sustainability Report the University of Melbourne has identified a range of material issues, most important of which are responsible investment, campus development, governance, sustainable campus operations, digital innovation and student engagement on sustainability issues. This case study is focused on how the University empowers students to take solid action on sustainability issues.

Stakeholder engagement in accordance with the GRI Standards

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) defines the Principle of Stakeholder Inclusiveness when identifying material issues (or a company’s most important impacts) as follows:

“The organization should identify its stakeholders, and explain how it has responded to their reasonable expectations.”

Stakeholders must be consulted in the process of identifying a company’s most important impacts and their reasonable expectations and interests must be taken into account. This is an important cornerstone for CSR / sustainability reporting done responsibly.

Key stakeholder groups the University of Melbourne engages with:

Stakeholder Group

Students

Employees

Business

Government and Community Partners

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

The University is committed to engage its stakeholders in decisions related to sustainability issues. The stakeholders are identified based on their particular interests, as well as, their ability to determine the sustainability performance of the University. Specifically, within the year 2016, the University received feedback from internal and external stakeholders, student representatives, business partners, industry groups, government and community organisations. This feedback has been incorporated into sustainability decision making procedures.

Stakeholder engagement assisted the University of Melbourne to identify the issues of major importance to its community, to comprehend and address the University’s material impacts and acknowledge the necessary commitments to make the greatest contribution to undertaking sustainability issues.

What actions were taken by Melbourne University to engage students with sustainability issues?

In its 2016 Sustainability Report the University of Melbourne reports that it took the following actions for encouraging and enabling students to engage with sustainability issues:

Engagement of students in sustainability initiatives was wide-reaching in 2016, comparing to 2014, and included:

The Fairtrade Steering Committee. The students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, organized a one-day Fairtrade market across campus in May 2016, aiming to engage and raise awareness on Fairtrade and other sustainability related topics.

The “Follow Your Waste” tour. The university staff and students visits the landfill centre used by the University contactors.

The Student Union (UMSU) environment group organised a series of workshops to strengthen the University’s Sustainability Charter and Plan.

Active involvement of staff and students in the Sustainability Advocates Forum.

C16Hack held in April/May of 2016. The students participated in a series of workshops that challenged them to provide innovative solutions to various sustainability issues on campus.

Bee keeping tours and lectures. This educational and information sharing series engaged a large number of students, as well as, staff and the general public

Four “Ride to Uni” events, promoting cycling as a sustainable means of transport, health and wellbeing.

Launch of Green Impact in March 2017. Green Impact is an international, sustainability change and engagement programme launched in the UK by the National Union of Students. The programme aims at raising awareness of sustainability issues globally, by giving people a concrete approach to address sustainability issues and enabling them in achieving these actions. Engaging students is an essential component of the programme.

Arming graduate students with the knowledge and skills so they can contribute to sustainability through their future professions:

As the graduates must be ready to adapt to the industries of the future sustainable economy, the University of Melbourne is taking action and is committed to developing by 2020 all undergraduate degree programs (at the course and/or major level) to enable students to understand and apply sustainability knowledge in their field.

After finishing their studies, [tweetthis]University of Melbourne graduates have a well-developed approach on sustainability issues[/tweetthis].

Which GRI indicators/Standards have been addressed?

The GRI indicator addressed in this case is: G4-EC8: Significant indirect economic impacts, including the extent of impacts and the updated GRI Standard is: Disclosure 203-2 Significant indirect economic impacts

78% of the world’s 250 largest companies report in accordance with the GRI Standards

SustainCase was primarily created to demonstrate, through case studies, the importance of dealing with a company’s most important impacts in a structured way, with use of the GRI Standards. To show how today’s best-run companies are achieving economic, social and environmental success – and how you can too.

This case study is based on the 2015 Global Responsibility Report by Nielsen published on the Global Reporting Initiative Sustainability Disclosure Database that can be found at this link.

Sharing its expertise in data collection and analysis with governments, nonprofit organizations and other stakeholders, to create value for society as a whole, is a top priority for Nielsen. In order to achieve this challenging goal Nielsen took action to:

collaborate, in a number of ways, with universities

advance UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through Project 8 (an online data collaboration platform)

help Good World Solutions (a nonprofit social enterprise aimed at improving factory workers’ lives worldwide) with survey design

enter into a strategic alliance with Special Olympics

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2015 Global Responsibility Report Nielsen identified a range of material issues, such as product and service responsibility, data privacy, security and integrity, market responsiveness and proactivity, employee relations, business ethics and integrity. Among these, as a leading global information, data and measurement company, operating in more than 100 countries, creating value for society as a whole stands out as a key material issue for Nielsen.

Key stakeholder groups Nielsen engages with:

How stakeholder engagement was made to identify material issues

Nielsen used its expertise in data collection and analysis to collect stakeholder feedback through surveys, focus groups, social media platforms, interviews and meetings. In total, more than 30 interviews were conducted and over 200 internal and external stakeholders were engaged.

What actions were taken by Nielsen to create value for society as a whole through its research expertise?

In its 2015 Global Responsibility Report Nielsen reports that it took the following actions for creating value for society as a whole through its research expertise:

Collaborating with universities

Nielsen works together with academic institutions in a number of ways, including:

assisting with curriculum design

offering dissertation and research grants

providing research findings and online education regarding market analytics

engaging with universities through guest lectures, research collaborations, office visits, academic internships and professional development workshops

Advancing UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through Project 8

Nielsen played a key role in the creation of Project 8, an online data collaboration platform intended to help researchers across different sectors share, compare, analyze and discuss data related to sustainable development.

Helping Good World Solutions with survey design

Nielsen data scientists assist Good World Solutions – a nonprofit organization aimed at improving the lives of factory workers worldwide by polling them on their working conditions, through their mobile phones – in designing survey questions and a range of related matters, using Nielsen’s expertise in survey design to help factory workers across the globe report about their working conditions – also delivering valuable data, regarding their sourcing practices, to multinational corporations.

Entering into a strategic alliance with Special Olympics

In October 2014 Nielsen entered into a strategic alliance with Special Olympics, to help the organization gain a deeper understanding of people with intellectual disabilities and their influence in communities (e.g. as consumers), through research, data and insights provided, assisting Special Olympics in creating more successful programs.

Simon Pitsillides: What are the challenges and opportunities presented by your new role as GRI’s Chief Executive?

Tim Mohin: I’ve seen, firsthand, how sustainability reporting can change the way a company does business and create positive impacts Tweet This! for a company’s employees, customers and other stakeholders. I became GRI’s Chief Executive because I truly believe in the transformational power of transparency. I’m focused on figuring out ways to help organizations and their stakeholders get even more out of their investments in sustainability reporting. Thousands of companies all around the world produce sustainability reports, which is a positive development over the past 20 years. But we have not seen change at the scale we need, in order to achieve our end goal: sustainable development. We need companies to dig deeper and discover the additional actions needed to accelerate change. Helping with this process is our biggest challenge at GRI, but also a tremendous opportunity to play a role in creating a better world.

Pitsillides: How will GRI progress under your leadership in getting more SMEs to report in accordance with the GRI Standards?

The Global Reporting Initiative’s Headquarters in Amsterdam

Mohin: It is difficult to overstate the importance of SME-reporting. Around 90% of global economic activity is the result of small and medium enterprises, so we know we cannot achieve our goal of sustainable development without them. Many SMEs lack the resources to produce a full-blown annual sustainability report like large corporations. As a result, most SMEs have refrained from reporting and currently about 10% of the sustainability reports in the GRI Sustainability Disclosure Database are from SMEs. One of the main reasons for this low uptake is that management at most SMEs fails to see the business case for sustainability reporting. Instead, they see reporting as a compliance requirement, rather than a strategic business practice that can directly benefit their companies.

This is why in 2016, together with the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, GRI launched the second phase of the program “Corporate Sustainability and Reporting for Competitive Business”. The program aims to help SMEs, based in six developing countries, across three continents (Colombia, Ghana, Indonesia, Peru, South Africa and Vietnam), use sustainability reporting to gain better access to global value chains. Through this program, GRI will develop and pilot a new adaptation of the GRI Standards tailored for SMEs. The goal is to assist them in efficiently using GRI Standards and disclosing their sector specific impacts. After the pilot phase of the program has been successfully conducted in the six aforementioned countries, the SME adaptation of GRI Standards can be made available for wider adoption.

Additionally, the new GRI Standards already give organizations the flexibility to choose to disclose information that is most relevant to them without producing an entire sustainability report. This innovation in reporting lowers the barrier for new reporters but still produces meaningful results. I hope this will spur on much more reporting amongst SMEs.

More and more providers of capital are asking tough questions of companies these days. Lending institutions and investors increasingly consider sustainability performance when evaluating companies.

Pitsillides: Can you provide information on how the EU Directive 2014/95/EU has impacted sustainability reporting and, more specifically, reporting in accordance to the GRI Standards?

Mohin: It is a bit premature to speak about the impact of the EU Directive on Non-financial reporting, as the transposition of the directive into national legislation is still happening. We do know that a large number of companies will start to report as a result of the directive. This will significantly increase transparency across Europe. This is a welcome change since it will give these companies and their stakeholders the information they need to inform decisions that can contribute to sustainable development.

Companies that are subject to the directive can use the GRI Standards to fulfill their reporting requirement. GRI’s Global Sustainability Standards Board developed GRI Standards based on input from a truly diverse set of stakeholders including labor groups, business associations, civil society organizations, and investors. As a result, any organization, in any sector of the economy, anywhere in the world, can use GRI Standards to increase transparency and communicate with all of their stakeholders.

Pitsillides: Why the transition from G4 Guidelines to GRI Standards? What does this transition mean, in terms of changes, for businesses and organizations?

Mohin: For organizations that have already adopted G4, the changes are minor. The GRI Standards are built on the G4 Guidelines, which have been restructured into a set of modular, interrelated reporting standards. The GRI Standards include all the concepts and disclosures from G4, in an improved structure and with clearer requirements. The content is organized in a more straightforward way, with less repetition. No new topics have been added to GRI Standards. Throughout the transition from G4 to GRI Standards, care has been taken to preserve the focus on materiality, and to minimize changes to the G4 disclosures and their methodologies.

A company’s high performance standards and reputation are intangibles that help to attract and motivate employees.

For organizations that are just beginning their reporting journey, adopting GRI Standards should be simpler because of the clarifications the Global Sustainability Standards Board has made to the content. These changes make it easier for an organization to know what they need to report and how they need to report it.

Pitsillides: Why should a company or any organization issue a sustainability report? What are the benefits of sustainability reporting in accordance to the GRI Standards?

Mohin: Organizations that use the GRI reporting framework have reported many benefits as a result of sustainability reporting. Here are a handful of the benefits our reporters have told us about:

1. Improved management systems – A key benefit of the reporting process is that it allows a company to track progress and highlight areas needing improvement, so that it can manage what it measures and make changes where necessary. Once a company tracks and assesses its performance, it can identify areas where it could be doing better, e.g. potential productivity improvements and cost reductions.

2. Attracting, motivating and retaining employees – A company’s high performance standards and reputation are intangibles that help to attract and motivate employees. The reporting process shows that a company is not just talking about sustainability issues, but is also prepared to publicly discuss, measure and act on them. In today’s competitive talent market, increased recruitment and employee engagement are significant benefits.

3. Enhanced stakeholder relations – The sustainability reporting process is an important tool companies can use to disclose non-financial performance to stakeholders. Through the relationships which the reporting process can create between a company and its stakeholders, the business gets vital feedback on the effects of operations. Based on this feedback, companies can take action to address stakeholder concerns as well as improve its business processes.

4. Attracting funding – More and more providers of capital are asking tough questions of companies these days. Lending institutions and investors increasingly consider sustainability performance when evaluating companies, e.g. good governance, ethical values, social priorities and environmental actions. Sustainability reporting also demonstrates that a company is working to manage risks over the medium and long-term.

Pitsillides: With over 20 years of experience in corporate social responsibility, and with your new appointment with GRI, how do you see today’s global business landscape? What are the key environmental, economic and social challenges facing corporations?

Mohin: Collectively we are facing tremendous sustainability challenges including climate change, corruption, poverty, and gender inequality to name only a few. In my 20 years working in corporate responsibility, I witnessed how sustainability reporting can really make a difference. But I also know that business-as-usual will not get the job done. We have to dig deeper and do more if we want to find solutions to these challenges. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a good example. The private sector will play the pivotal role in whether or not we achieve those 17, ambitious Global Goals. It won’t be enough for businesses to merely match their current sustainability efforts to the goals. Each business will need to look for new ways to contribute to sustainable development. GRI has partnered with the UN Global Compact to help the private sector make the SDGs a reality. We recently launched the Reporting on the SDGs Action Platform, which consists of representatives from leading businesses, civil society organizations, statistics bureaus, international organizations, governments, investor groups and data users. The Action Platform members will work with GRI and UN Global Compact to establish best practice for businesses to report their contributions to the SDGs.

This case study is based on the 2014 Annual Report by Emirates Transport published on the Global Reporting Initiative Sustainability Disclosure Database that can be found at this link.
By the end of 2014, Emirates Transport had a fleet of over 17,000 vehicles, in addition to a network of 41 locations all over the UAE. Emirates Transport strives, in cooperation with its strategic partners, to achieve high levels of safety and security in its services, particularly in school transport services – Emirates Transport transports more than 200 thousand children to school on a daily basis. After measuring and setting targets, Emirates Transport took action to enhance children’s safety in school transport Tweet This!, promote senior management engagement, organize events and activities in different health and safety areas, offer programs and courses on safety issues, encourage creativity and innovation in traffic safety methods through the Traffic & Education Award, foster employee participation, promote Emirates Transport’s safety culture through periodical and non-periodical publications and, also, maintain the highest level of safety through inspection visits by senior management and safety teams.

What are the material issues the company has identified?

In its 2014 Annual Report Emirates Transport identified a range of material issues, such as supporting government compliance and guidelines, excellence and leadership in services and processes, investment and strengthening of the organization’s financial position. Among these, ensuring security and safety in its services stands out as the top material issue for Emirates Transport as a public transport provider.

What actions were taken by Emirates Transport to promote security and safety in its services as a public transport provider?

In its 2014 Annual Report Emirates Transport set the following targets for promoting security and safety in its services as a public transport provider, based on its approach to materiality – on taking action on what matters, where it matters:

Enhancing children’s safety in school transport

In cooperation with state regulatory and legislative authorities and in support of safety standards across transport means, particularly school transport means, the Executive Committee at Abu Dhabi School Transport was engaged to launch the specifications and requirements of a smart systems package for child protection within the school transport system, as part of the community project entitled “Children’s Safety in School Transport”, launched in support of HH Lt General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, in cooperation and coordination with the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ, Abu Dhabi Department of Transport and Abu Dhabi Education Council. During 2014, Emirates Transport was awarded an approval by the Abu Dhabi Environment, Health & Safety Centre.

Promoting senior management engagement

The road traffic environment, health and safety (HSE) system enjoys the senior management’s full support, through the provision of different kinds of resources, with periodical reviews of the occupational HSE system. The senior management’s engagement is reflected in the formation of the Executive Safety Audit Committee for school transport and business centres in July 2014, chaired by the Director General and with the membership of a number of Emirates Transport executive managers. The committee convenes on a monthly basis, to discuss all issues related to the HSE system (accidents reports, audit, inspection, etc.), to allow for decisions to be taken regarding the development of policies and different work manuals, for corrective steps to be established and resources provided. The total number of recommendations offered by the committee during its periodical meetings reached 140 recommendations, with an 87% rate of completion as of the beginning of 2015. The majority of these focused on following up on inspection and audit reports, the development of business actions, training, field control and accidents investigation. The major results of these recommendations and follow-up were represented in the decline in the rate of medium-level and major traffic accidents caused by Emirates Transport drivers by 39% during Q2014/4, compared to the same period in 2013.

Organizing events and activities in different health and safety areas

The 3rd session of the Occupational Health & Safety Month was organized under the logo “Your Safety our Success Element”, during which 250 events and activities in different health and safety areas were organized, in addition to medical examinations and blood donation campaigns. Two evacuation drills were organized across school buses and at main offices, in coordination with the Civil Defence forces. The total number of employees participating was 15,000, while participation from outside Emirates Transport reached 20,000. More than 90 government departments participated in the Safety Month activities, indicating its major impact on different concerned parties.

Offering programmes and courses on safety issues

In support of its strategic vision and objectives, Emirates Transport offers different programmes and courses regarding safety issues in coordination with the School Transport Department. Educational programmes are designed to enhance students’, bus drivers’ and supervisors’ awareness. These programmes are considered part of Emirates Transport’s general responsibility practices, covering both employees and stakeholders. Organized lectures highlight the importance of safety guides across school buses, with the Ten Golden Rules, designed to protect students while leaving buses, particularly young children. Practical and theoretical lectures focus on safety issues in terms of the protection of bus seats and the maintenance of buses’ general conditions.

Encouraging creativity and innovation in traffic safety methods through the Traffic & Education Award

The Emirates Transport Traffic & Education Award has been updated on a regular basis until its 2015-2014 session, during which two new classes were added, addressing creativity and innovation in traffic safety and safety person of the year, with the door open to all community groups to participate in, along with award activities. Online participation is currently available. The award aims to encourage creativity and innovation in traffic safety methods, through constructive competition among schools and other beneficiaries, in support of community welfare, and the establishment of traffic safety terms and values between students, parents and community members.

Fostering employee participation

The League of Innovators was launched in 2014. The first season was allocated to applicable safety in school transport, during which the Judging Committee received 155 ideas.

Promoting Emirates Transport’s safety culture through periodical and non-periodical publications

Emirates Transport promotes its safety culture among all concerned parties through Safety Periodical Magazine, which is geared towards school students and of which four issues were published during 2014, in addition to a special manual on safety in school transport, as well as the publication/distribution of many educational posters on safety and the environment.

Maintaining the highest level of safety through inspection visits by senior management and safety teams

To maintain the highest level of safety, the senior management and safety teams carried out a number of inspection visits during 2014. The Director General, accompanied by a group of senior management officials and safety/operation staff, conducted visits across a group of business centres and School Transport Department branches. Visits focused on the methods to be followed in order to achieve the highest standards and objectives in students’ safety, to improve and enhance institutional reputation by maintaining full compliance with school transport to limit and control the number of accidents. Subsequent reports indicate some gaps for which a detailed action plan is required to discuss the following points:

Follow up for the implementation of health and safety systems and instructions.

Development of new models to mitigate accidents among centres and individuals.

Develop safety field control systems across all transport centres.

Develop a system to measure training effectiveness and impact on drivers.

Attach audit reports with accident reports, with development of effective solutions for each type of accident.
