Chances of climate catastrophe are ignored, scientists say
A group of climate scientists calls worst-case scenarios such as human extinction and worldwide societal collapse a “dangerously underexplored topic” in calls for the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to do a special science report on “catastrophic climate change.” They say that calculations of their likelihood are necessary in the battle against global warming – just as an airplane is overwhelmingly likely to land safely, safety is dramatically increased because so much attention has been made to calculate the worst-case scenario and then learn how to avoid a crash.
Spain orders temperature limits for businesses in sweeping energy saving decree
Air conditioning cannot be lowered below 27 degrees in summer and heating cannot exceed 19C this winter at businesses in Spain, according to a new decree – and shop fronts must turn off the lights by 10 p.m. The new decree is part of an effort to reduce gas demand ahead of winter amid the energy crunch brought on by Russia’s war in Ukraine.
How the New Climate Bill Would Reduce Emissions
The climate and energy package announced last week by Senate Democrats would put the United States closer to its goal of cutting global warming pollution in half by 2030 – if signed into law, the bill’s hefty tax incentives could enable the country to cut its net greenhouse gas emissions by roughly 40 percent below 2005 levels by the end of this decade.
